No sunroof would certainly eliminate that problem.

It was REALLY hot here yesterday...

It got into the 90s here yesterday, and so I was ready to see if the "fix" to my sunroof was going to actually work or not. I am happy to report that my sunroof opened just fine; no problems whatsoever. It had been sitting in the sun the whole time too, so it was MUCH hotter than 90 where the car was. I was worried it would get stuck and go back down, but nope! So YAY!!!

I just turned 3000k and on the sunroof stuck! After a few tries and a little pressure it opened. I called the dealer and was told "yea, that happens on hot days. MINI knows about the problem but as of yet still has no resolution!"
What the hell kind of answer is that!
I will contact MINI tomorrow.

Joel

We picked up Molly today and with the Temps. in the High 70's she had NO problem what so ever with the Sunroof. Unlike our 08 MCS Loaner...I'm starting to wonder if the MCS are just problem prone!!??

We went in yesterday to look at options and make decisions for our purchase. I really really wanted a sunroof. It was in the 80s so I thought it was a good time to see what the problems with the sunroof were. After getting trying the sunroof in a new mc, and experiencing what it did (actually what it didn't do), I decided I could live without the sunroof. I wouldn't mind a slight delay or turning on the ac to cool the car down some before opening the sunroof, or even touching the back sunroof to unstick it, but the problem seemed more significant. Yeah, the sunroof would open after the back sunroof window was nudged, but the motor having to work that hard trying to open it couldn't be good. It didn't want to crack open (or whatever they call opening slightly) nor did it want to open all the way. Mini has known about this problem for a long time and there is no permanent resolutions being reported. Just don't need another headache and something else to continue to try to have fixed.

I commented way back in this thread that I had problems with my sunroof and after the first six months they serviced it and lubed, aligned it etc.. and in truth it didn't really do much. It would still get stuck and I was starting to believe that I was stuck with a 1st gen Clubby issue that would not get resolved.

I am heading down to Dragon's Tale and so I went in to get the 3rd tail light issue fixed and also asked about the sunroof again. They told me that there was a true service bulletin with a fix. They made the fix in about 45mins and the sunroof has worked great ever since. I will be spending about 10 hours driving tomorrow to the event and will test it vigorously this weekend. I have my fingers crossed but just wanted to update my situation with the roof on this thread.

Shamrok - do you happen to have a TSB number for the fix you mention above? I'd like to get it in front of my dealer.

Unless this service bulletin is the third of it's kind, I think the "true fix" they're talking about is a different "adjustment" of the first "fix".

Shamrok will have to let us know how it acts this summer when the temps start going up.

As far as mine... I solved that problem.

I traded the car in on an '09 JCW. (still have sunroof but with it being about 90 this weekend, it still worked. Keeping fingers crossed)

I'm back from a very rainy Dragon.. but had a great time driving the twisties. I tested my sunroof dozens of times over the weekend and had no issues. It worked better than new.. which was not saying much because it only opened on first try about 1-10 before. It worked every time and eventhough it was not hot outside I am feeling pretty good about the prospects this summer.

I talked with the service manager and he said in this service bulletin you have to remove the glass and put it back in when aligning it. I asked for a copy of the bulletin and he gave me one attached to my invoice. The service bulletin he gave me is numbered SI M54 03 08 "Special Roofs" which is dated August 08 and supersedes the service bulletin with the same number dated June 08.

I would be happy to fax it to anyone if the send me a private message with their fax number. I will keep on testing and if things start to go bad as the weather gets hotter I will make sure to repost to this thread.

I think the bottom line (more than a year later) is that there's still no official fix that actually solves this problem for everyone. It seems like this 'sunroof' issue is in the same bin as the 'cold start' issue, i.e. waiting for BMW/MINI to get their heads out of their butts and seriously put some effort into solving this.

I attempted to Google the SI M54 03 08 and SIM540308 and didn't get any hits for it.

My car has been in 7 times for this problem and they have done the Mini fix twice and still does not work. My dealer is shocked and they act like they have never seen this before. I had to tell them about the bullitin. They did this about the timing chain noise too. Its a game my dealer likes to play called (Never Heard of That? ).

It was 60F last week and mine did it again. I have lost track of how many times I have brought it in for this problem. I am sure that I am up to 5 or 6 times now.
Come on Mini, this is a recall!

Scott.

I would seriously consider invoking the North Carolina Lemon Law to either get this resolved or get a new car or get your purchase price refunded. I'm not a lawyer, but seven attempts to fix the issue most certainly qualifies you. Just because it's a sunroof doesn't mean it's not covered. A MINI sunroof is a $1,000.00 accessory, and that qualifies as a substantial reduction in the value of your vehicle, since it's not working!

WOW! Glad I came over to this thread! My wife really really wants the sunroof but after reading all of the issues here I am pretty sure that is right out!

We live in New Mexico where it can get pretty dang hot, heck yesterday and today were in the 90's.....

The beauty of the sunroof was that it ventilated the back two seats....where our dogs will be riding.....hmmmmmm......

If she really wants the sunroof, guess what? YOU SHOULD GET IT! This thread, like any other of the "I have issues with..." threads, makes things sound so horrible. That's because you only hear from the people that are having problems. My 07 had this problem, but you know what? The fix actually fixed it! And we have had some VERY hot days here in San Diego since then, and it has always gone up like it is supposed to.

I am not even sure that they are still using the same sunroof design on the new cars now anyway. But even if they are, and you do have this "major problem" with the sunroof that EVERYONE else is having, it isn't like the sunroof is worthless. Yes, it should go up by you pressing a button on the key. If it doesn't, it really takes a minimal effort of a split second to give it a gentle nudge with your fingers.

Bottom line is, if you (or in this case, the wife) want it, get it.

the sunroof issue doesn't bother me - it just takes 2 hands to open the sunroof...one for the switch - one to push up (briefly) on the glass

No issues at the dealership with the pano roofs we tested. Dealer stated that there have been no issues with the 09's they have sold but are well aware of the TSB and issues some folks have been having. They were very helpful and said that no matter what they would take care of it if we were to order one. We shall see but I really liked our dealership here!

+1 on ordering the sunroof anyway, even with the issues you see on this thread. I just had the sunroof issue, now fixed (I hope). Even with the problem, I'm glad I have the sunroof. The sun is actually out today on Long Island, first time in eight days, so it's wide-open.
