E-brake doesn't work on left hand side
 

Can anyone help me with this problem. Mini Cooper 2002.

The e-brake work as it should on the right hand side but not at all on the left.

When I release the e-brake the small lever that attaches to the end of the cable won't release by itself. If I push it with my hand it will release though.
On the right hand side it releases as it should.

Does anyone have an exploded view of the brakes or some advice on how to solve this?!

The brakes work perfectly besides that.

I couldn't find anything on Pelicanparts. :(

I did try spraying it with WD40 but didn't help... I bet something must be adjusted or replaced but don't really know what and would like to have an idea or two before I tare it down.

Well I have a shop manual at home which can help. Ill take a look at it when I get home from work tonight and scan some images in and send them to you.....:thumbsup:

When you get a chance, i suggest shelling out 60 bucks for a used one ....never know when it will come in handy

But, if it is the caliper piston, the entire caliper has to be replaced.

Weird! :eek2: My '04 is doing exactly the same thing.

No, the cables move as supposed to. And those small levers but the left one won't return as it should. The brakes works perfectly otherwise.

Went through the left rear brake yesterday and everything looked in order besides that the cable and the lever didn't move as easy as supposed to.

I let some WD40 make it's way into the cable and lubed the lever and piston as well. At first there where no difference at allv - but after a while it started working and now it works perfectly!:thumbsup:

No ebrake on left caliper; right caliper seized
 

Worth reviving since I am having this same problem on my '04, but the symptoms are not at all straightforward.

The ebrake will not release and, at the handbrake, just allows the cable to drop inside the housing when the handbrake is released. The left caliper ebrake actuator does not spring back/decompress when the ebrake is off. The right caliper ebrake actuator contracts when the ebrake is on and releases when the ebrake is off. Here is where it gets interesting: With the back wheels off the ground and the handbrake on the left wheel can be rotated by hand. With the handbrake off the right wheel is seized and cannot be rotated by hand.

So on the left caliper, which does not respond to movement of the handbrake and whose ebrake actuator appears to always be compressed, the ebrake will not compress the caliper. On the right caliper, whose ebrake actuator does respond to the movement of the handbrake, the caliper is compressed on the rotor and seized.

Maybe the right side is over-ratcheted and the left side is not ratcheted enough.
