Clutch Replacement
The clutch has been replaced (12000 miles, 2006 MCS). As reported before, the new clutch feels "lighter", but what bugs me most is that about the first 2 inches of pedal travel are super soft before the pedal hits what I'd call normal resistance. Is this normal or could it be adjusted/tightened?

If possible, park your car facing up hill. put something between the clutch and the seat that will keep the clutch depressed all night. You may have air bubbles in there and this will force them back into the res. Cured mine.

There is a bleed nipple on the clutch slave cylinder.

Im just over 12k on my S and have noticed the clutch starting to go too. Hmmmm. Going to upgrade soon I think, and throw in a quaife while im at it.
What clutch did you go with? |
^^ I am assuming he was under warranty. I would be weary of letting the dealer change my clutch again. I blew a tranny at 21-22k and they changed the clutch because it was soaked in gear oil. I struggled with that dealer because they didnt want to warranty it, and then did a crappy job (stripped my airbox screws, had greasy hand prints everywhere, and hammered the hubcentric ring to put the axle in, causing the wheel not to fit, which they forced on with an impact gun). I know for sure they didn't change the flywheel, and definetly didn't resurface it.

If I'm not mistaken you can't resurface a mini flywheel..That's why all replace when changing the clutch.

I mean COMPLETELY DISINIGRATE!!! @10,89-miles:no: Not happy about it, but I had a throw out bearing go and BOOM! the rest went as well. It was not fun and the dealer was going to cover it in full under warranty and then the owner decided I drove too hard...:no: :mad: It was not my driving style by any means. I take care of my car and it was the bearing. Be ware of these they are made of.........what? Plastic?.....YES!:eek: Why in the hell would Mini do this??? I was getting the chewie growl, took it in and having the clutch replaced under the extended warranty, glad I had that, Global said they are allowed one clutch change under warranty?????

sounds like air in the system...you can also just pump the clutch a while. It should get better with use. They are "self bleeding" according to the haynes manual...although it only bleeds itself when there is just a little air. I had a release bearing melt one time...I would love to know why they use plastic!

new clutch
New clutch seems to be fine thus far, although we're only 1,000 miles into it. It was a dealer replacement, so can't tell you what parts/brands used, other than it was listed as remanufactured. Based on clutch performance thus far, I feel it was definitely the right move to have it addressed.
It's ridiculous that any new vehicle should have clutch issues, especially "performance" vehicles several years into production. Greg |
