Clutch pedal motion not smooth

Hey guys. I am about to take the Mini in for several small things and I am going to mention this issue but I wanted to get your guys take on it before I get some BS from the dealer

Anyway, when releasing the clutch pedal (that is, engaging the clutch) it doesn't always operate smoothly. It almost seems to get stuck on the way up sometimes. This doesn't happen all the time but it has caused me to burn the clutch once or twice and stall the car once. It's really annoying at this point. Any ideas?

PS. I can also feel the unsmooth motion when pressing the pedal down but it doesn't really have an affect on driveability. This is a hydrolic clutch, right? lol

Thanks,

Kirk

Mine had an unsmooth motion for a while before my pressure plate failed. Also, if it is not coming back up, it could very well be your hydraulic slave cylinder. They go out all the time on the 05's.

Search for squeaky clutch pedal. You will find a lot. I had this problem and it was the release bearing rubbing caused by a bent clutch fork. If it is not the slave cylinder, it may be that. If the fork is bent, it will push on the release bearing at an angle causing it to bind up.

I had the same problem, it was the clutch bearing. When you take it in, be sure that the service guy feels it himself, otherwise they do think anything is wrong.

i know this thread is 10 years old but i figured its better to revive a (really) old thread than to start a new one.

OP did you ever find a resolution to this? im having the same exact issue and am hearing differing opinions ranging from clutch to bearing to slave cylinder.

I have no direct experience with this symptom. However I would say very unlikely it is caused by the master or slave cylinders. This kind of problem is nearly always a problem at the clutch mechanism. release lever arm, release bearing, friction disc, or defective pressure plate and may include dual mass flywheel.
