MOAT IX -2015

When: Sunday May 17th, 2015. Arrive at 8:00 AM - Group 1 will now leave at 8:40 AM with the other groups following at 10 minute intervals. so we will all be gone by 9:00 AM.

Where: We will meet at the mall at the Valley Circle Blvd/Mullholland Dr. exit off FWY 101 - the south side of the freeway. There is a McDonalds on the corner. For your GPS - the Starbucks is at 23381 Mulholland Dr. Woodland Hills. When you get into the mall, Starbucks will be on your left. You will see many MINI's. Gas is available across the 101 at Shell on Ventura Blvd a couple of blocks east.

We have a unique issue starting at this mall. Scott McIntyre informed me that if we don't leave the mall by 9:00 AM - the cops will be called. So that's why we are leaving a bit earlier and will all be gone by 9:00 AM!!

MOAT stands for (***** of All Twisties) and is our annual SCMM Event in the Santa Monica Mountains.

The first MOAT was run on July 1, 2006 and run every year except 2013 when there was a motorcycle accident video that went viral and caused greatly increased police presence.

MOAT has always been SCMM's premier Southern California twisty event because of the great number and variety of good roads in the Santa Monica Mountains area, from Calabasas to Malibu and out to Ventura County. In the past we have done runs as long as 126 miles and many SCMM members who are not twisty maniacs like some of us thought that was a bit too much. We have listened and we have re-done the MOAT route to take in the best twisties using a 77 mile route with at least two stops. We are also starting in a different place and stopping for lunch in a different place then we have ever done. So this is now MOAT IX.

Route maps for MOAT are handed out at the driver's meeting after signing the SCMM Waiver. Passengers have gotten sick on this run. Don't even think about putting people in the back seat. Dogs are probably not a good idea either. A two-way radio is a must-have item (Motorola Talk-About or Midland are best. $50-$90 for a decent pair).

Important update below :

We are NOT RACING!! There is no prize for coming in ahead of any other MINI. We will break up the cars into 2 or 3 (depending on the turnout) run groups. If you have a passenger that day, be sure to inform them that this is a very twisty drive - passengers have been known to get car sick.

The other issue with MOAT is to be very careful of the bicyclists - especially on the back country roads. Often they can't hear us coming on them and are riding 2 or 3 abreast. Crossing the double yellow to pass them is OK - as long as you can see what is coming!!

If the weather cooperates, the views of the Pacific coming off the twisties can be epic!! Bring your camera!! And your two-way radios set to Channel 7 Sub 21.

If this is your first twisty run... You must read the SCMM Run Etiquette and Twisty Tips

In fact, everyone should review it again.
