Dragon Scouting Party

EDIT: Return trip to the Dragon
On Saturday September 27th a few of us are driving up to the Dragon to scout out locations for MOTD events. http://www.sunshineminis.org/forums/...onmotoring.gif
This will be a day trip to the Dragon and back.
We will leave Greenville, South Carolina around 7am which will get us to the Dragon by 9:30am and return to Greenville by no later 9pm.
If you have never heard of the Dragon or MOTD then now is the time to brush up on some MINI knowledge, simply
click on the word Dragon and MOTD to become all wise and powerful.
The primary purpose of the trip is to find restaurants that will be willing to accomodate groups of 15 MINI's for Dinners during the 2009 MOTD event.
While the primary focus will be to find restaurants that can accomodate us for breakfast, lunch and dinner we will also have enough time to run the Dragon.
So for those of you that have never been there before and would like to see where the Dragon is located and maybe run it at a leasurely pace, this would
be a great opportunity to do so.
For those that are veterans and would like to help out in finding restaurants and little known tid bits of information about the area, you are more than welcome.
This will be a great chance to learn about the surrounding area and everything it has to offer, trust me you don't want to miss out on this run.

Check out this place on the TN side of the Dragon. http://www.gondolierpizza.com/ we stopped there this year after the AutoX and it was great, one of the best burgers I've ever had and good parking too.

Ditto. Too early in the semester for me to take off a day. Darn students.

cabriopilot 08-19-2008 06:42 AM

I'm sorry we can't do it on a weekend but I'm trying to avoid the heavy traffic of motorcycles and TN Troopers that tend to come out on the weekends.

If anyone has a restaurant that they would like to recommend, please PM me with details such as:
Where it's located, what do they serve, cost, parking facilities, hours of operation, phone contacts and distance from Fontana Village.
Any or all of the information listed above would be greatly appreciated.

We have to work too, darn it!

I recommend Sweetwater BBQ in Robbinsville - especially for breakfast, after an early morning Dragon run! Their info is on this page:

MOTD Info

The primary idea of driving up to the Dragon is to scout out places to go for Dinner during next years MOTD.
If you are not familiar with MOTD it stands for MINI's On The Dragon.
The Dragon is a strech of road that winds itself alongs side the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, it is 11 miles
long and has 318 consecutive curves that make it one of the best roads around here to take your MINI.

The MOTD event lasts 5 days and is situatated in a remote part of western North Carolina, this is the reason for scouting out places to eat in advance.
Many of the meals throughout the event can be purchased on location (Fontana Village) but some of us
have decided that setting up a drive to go with a group of MINI's would be more fun than eating on location.
This next year we plan on having Breakfast runs, Lunch runs and Dinner runs depending on the event
scheduling some days may have all three while others may only have one or the other.
To get more info on MOTD checkout Barrys website at www.minisonthedragon.info or checkout www.tailofthedragon.com .

If you really want to get the whole scoop and meet some of the nut jobs that will be attending this next years MOTD then come out to the monthly
MINI Social that will take place September 3rd at 7pm at 5 Guys Hamburgers off I-85 and Pelham Road.

Y'all have fun. Was good to see you last year during our Quattro de Mayo event. We took over Highlands NC for our base.

May get up there and see you 10 September!

InTTruder 09-01-2008 05:51 AM

IF you get as far as Highlands NC, hit the Fireside Grille on the main drag. Allan is a Mini driver, and honorable QDM member!

UPDATE: I made an impromptu drive up to the Dragon yesterday with LadyGodiva and ran into a little misfortune
so I will not be able to make a run up to the Dragon by September 10th.
I will have to reschedule for a later time and I'll repost this trip when the exact time is known.

For those interested in finding out more on why I had to cancel this trip you can read more about it on Last minute Dragon run-Sunday 8/31?

Sorry to hear about your misfortune! I'll be keeping an eye on this thread as I enjoy going to the dragon. Always like meeting people who enjoy their cars as much as myself. I've been a couple of times when I had my Miata for Miata's at the Gap. Also had the chance to take my 944T which as a real hoot! This will be my first trip in the Mini!

Will you be joining us for one of the Dragon Scouting Parties, MSSD or for MOTD? :)

jdboy 09-07-2008 06:15 PM

I'm planning on it if the timing is right with work and such. I would like to see some of the other cars from the forum in person. Also nothing wrong with makeing friends that know way more about my car than I do myself!
