Clutch and Flywheel

I am making the move to CMT (a local modified class similar to SM, but on street tires) from stock. This class has essentially unlimited modifications for a street drive can, but I still want to keep Sassafras as a daily driver. My first step will be adding a Quaife LSD (wheel spin is the Achilles heal of my '04 MCS). I plan on also replacing the stock clutch and flywheel at the same time. (The clutch would probably need replacing in a year or so anyway.) I am considering the Clutchmasters Stage 1 or 2 or ACT HDSS clutch and Clutchmasters or Fidanza lightened flywheel. Right now I only have a catback exhaust and drop in K&N filter, no real power mods, but I have a 15% pulley waiting to go on after the end of this season. I am not sure where the mods will end (given the open rules), but I don't anticipate doing much more than the pulley and a an intake during the next couple of years.

So, is Clutchmasters the way to go for the clutch and flywheel? Should I go with a Stage 1 or Stage 2? Does anyone have this set up?

You would probably get a lot more responses in the Driveline forum.

Doesn't SM allow for aftermarket clutch and flywheel? If so, are people just putting in the Quaife and leaving it at that? I thought the clutch and flywheel would be a good mod in autocross.

Depends on how much you will need to shift on your autocross course.

Quaife is fine.

Clutch and flywheel is OK for quick shifts.

I tend to run the entire course in first gear.
Sometimes I can shift to 2nd and stay there.

On the track it is a different story.

Check with Jan at RMW about your options for lightweight flywheel (not too light) and racing clutch options.

I have quaife with stock clutch and flywheel. Shifts and sounds same as stock but with better grip and little to minimal wheel spin unless I want it.

Yes, you can change differential, flywheel and clutch for SM class.

see

Email or talk to Jan for more info.

Figure from $600 to $1000 for labor costs sometimes more if the mechanic has not done it before.

Thanks. I am sold on Clutchmasters now.

Autox events around here are anywhere from 30 to 60 seconds. It seems that more and more courses are requiring at least one downshift to get a competitive time. One course earlier in the season had me shifting four times up and down between first and second. It got too tight for left foot braking alone to keep the revs up in second, but too fast to hold first.
