Today's Posts

In the menu there is a link to “Today’s posts”, when you log in this changes to “New Posts”. Many times after logging in I like to check up on today’s posts. Can’t we have both?

Before you login, the system doesn't treat you as a user that has previously visted the site, so it makes "today's posts" available to you.

Once you login, the vB recognizes when your last visit was and you see "new posts" which are the threads that have been posted to since your last visit.
  • If you haven't logged in in more than 24 hours, that should show all of the threads that have been posted to, in decending order by date, extending beyond "today".
  • If you have logged in the past 24 hours, then it would only show the threads that have been posted to since you're last visit.
It would seem like, the only thing that offering "today's posts" would do for logged in members would be:
  • not show all of the threads that "new posts" would show if it had been more than 24 hours
  • show the same threads "new posts" shows, but also show threads you may have already seen in your last visit (say 8 hours prior)
So I'm a little unclear what the advantage of trying to add in "today's posts" for logged in users would be, since new posts has a date attached to each thread.

This isn't a feature I use very often, so maybe your experience is a little different, but that's my understanding of what's going on.

Maybe it’s just me, I get lost easy. I come to this site many many times a day. Sometimes I don’t get to see all of today’s posts and then it auto clears the next time I visit.
I just thought it couldn’t hurt.

Are you logging out after each session (by hitting log out on the left column) and then returning to the site (say a few hours later) and then needing to type in your log in information?

(just trying to fully understand how your "new posts" are getting updated)

No, I just exit.

Or Like just now. I was reading Today's Posts, I came to ths topic and went to post a reply. I was promped to log in. When the post is completed I no longer have the option to return to "Today's Posts" to complete my read.

I'm still not clear why your browser isn't remembering you each time. It seems like there is a problem with the cookie. I'll have to get mferguson to help you with that part, and he can also comment on integreating today's topics in.

In any case, here's an idea to hold you over. Open up NAM and go to today's posts. Then when you want to view a thread, don't click on it in that window, instead place your mouse pointer over the link and (assuming you're on a pc) right mouse button click on the link, then open the link in a new window. That way you can be logged in the new window, but "today's posts" will stay behind in the original window for you to go back to.

Dave

Remember when it only listed the last five posts. Now it list the last ten posts  .

My problem is the same as Dave's in a way. I log on and off muplitle times a day to see what's new and what's going on.

Sometimes when I log on there may be three posts I want to look at, however, by the time I look at the first and reply the other one or two are gone. I wanted to reply to this but had to leave for a while and when I came back it was gone so I had to look it under forums.

Now my question is how many interesting things said today came and went while I was gone?

I would be nice of there was a link to all threads posted in the last 24 hours or so. Then when I came back I could check on what I missed (sorry but I must keep up with everything going on   ).

I mean, think about it, what if a new horsepower increase came out and I missed it.   I need more HP.

Earl

p.s. I don't know how involved this would be but Dave (DiD) does.
