You sure that's a sunglasses holder? Looks exactly like the unit in our '13 that had the keys in it upon delivery

 

Dealers would do that upon the purchase of MINIs. This clips onto the center rail and my sun glasses and regular glasses fit in it perfect. I'm sure it can be used for other items too.
Plus they offered it as a sunglass holder. I've seen this pic on the MINI USA site before.
