Drivetrain M7 "Little Scoop"
agreed, but so does throwing good money at bad parts (and there are more of them than good in the MINI world)
I've only been around since '05 and I think I've had enough of this community. I used to think ideas were good to talk about on a purely mechanical and scientific basis but all that good stuff seems to get caught up with so much of a pissing contest.
It seems every thread gets side-tracked with chest thumping from some. Not sure why the moderators allow it to continue, not that I'm looking for censorship.
I didn't suggest any Hp gain, no J.C. Whitney type go fast, jump higher stuff, and it seems to me that this mod would have been received with less attitude had I invented it myself instead of reporting it came from M7.
I'm done with this thread, have at it children.

Hi Bob,
I agree that dog piling gets old but I do understand where they are coming from.
I had a DFIC with all the fixins. I paid the full price. I thought at the time I made the right decision from talking to people who owned one. I had to talk to DFIC owners to find out if they felt it was worth the investment. Why, because there was zero testing info available from M7.
The hype was so high at the time that every one I talked to loved it. They couldn't really tell me why they liked it but I was hooked like a fish anyway. I shelled out over $1000.00 for all the bells and whistles. I really wish I could have purchased it knowing what performance benefits my grand was going to get me. In the end it didn't get me anything. I still think it looks cool.
They claim improvements on the new DFIC2 but again there is no tech data to back up the claim.
With this little scoop it's the same thing. Does it do anything? It might. Will it work with stock intercooler? maybe. If it does lower the intake temps will this = HP. Again, maybe but all these things should to be tested first before you go to market.
I think at the end of the day that's all these guys would need to stop the dog piling that happens.
Longboard

also - in the past, moderators have clamped down on any dissenting opinions. thankfully, that's changed.
I will say that there are some masters of confusion here on this forum. Very clever how this topic has done such an off topic turn as most M7 threads tend to do. Started with the mini scoop and now onto intercooler performance.
Hey, 483FITTER, where are you when needed?
You made me aware that my pics were off topic, to which I obliged by removing them. Yea, I misunderstood the function of the product on topic so they were in fact, off topic.

It's OFF TOPIC. And now I'm being sucked into it as well.
Just go start a thread entitled M7 intercooler sucks and leave it there. Having it stuffed down everyone's throat at every opportunity is nothing but bullying tactics. And straight out, that's what's happening all over this forum and others by all the same people.

A little back on topic: On my version of the IMD, the M7 blanket (or fraction there of) sits between the supercharger and the inlet manifold, not under the IC as designed. It acts to take the air coming in through the IMD and directing it under the manifold, including on the passenger side where the IC-inlet horn is.
The photo of the mini scoop and the M7 blanket shown in this thread from the side appears to show the blanket interfering with the airflow to the manifold. Consequently, while I can map the airflow with the IMD on my car, I can't do the same with the scoop on Paul's car. I'd like to see where the cooling air is going.
thanks,

Alright back to the subject at hand...
As I see it this mod, either by M7 or the Partsman piece may not be good for a Top Mount IC (TMIC). What I worry about is the flow through the IC. If there is air coming in from below it would disrupt the flow from the top to bottom of the TMIC since only so much air can occupy the same space. One would need to fashion some sort of block off plate to make it work with a TMIC.
Any thoughts on this?

Good point, Nathan. It has been discussed previously, maybe a year ago now, about the effect a shear flow of air could have on the working of the downdraft IC (I'm not trying to introduce new terminology here, just trying to use a description that covers many ICs of design different to the DFIC.)
As I've always said, airflow in the engine bay is one of the great secrets to better IATs and other parameters. It's a real challenge in the mini, especially with that honking IC up there in front on top. And we might be talking about turd polishing here when all's said and done. For me, it's still fun...

Hm.. I prob should search for this in your imd thread phil but i'm feeling lazy.
Where does the air go after it smacks into the intake manifold? Does it go down the front of the block or back up over the valve cover?

Do you think it really matters? I'm sure BMW/Chrysler did way more R&D on these things than we can ever imagine. As we have been finding out that alot of the stock stuff they put on this engine is showing to be the best for it Alright back to the subject at hand...

So how stupid do you feel everyone is here?

I never said it sucked nor do I have a history of bagging on M7. I thought it was fine until I reached to much HP. I have their front splitter on my car and love it. I have a new scoop from them that will find it's way on the car soon.
I think they just need to do a better job introducing their performance products.
Enough said.
I do wonder if this mod could actually help a TMIC. If the air coming in from the front flows under the intercooler from front to back could it not help the air to get out from under the intercooler. I'm wondering if it could help to create a vacuum from front to back helping to pull the air out from under the intercooler?

I have been thinking about this all day and I came up with the conclusion that If you want it buy it. I really think its a good idea that does its job. Some people just love the excitement of having Mr. UPS man knock on your door with a new fun Mini Cooper mod delivery... to better maximize/customize their car! This is one of my biggest hobbies.
Is this small beans "little scoop" really worth all the effort of dissing it to death? It is a scoop which funnels in air from the grill...wow...
I don't think M7 is forcing you to buy one with a gun to your head or claiming it turns your car into a rocket ship.

well, if you think so, that's good enough for me
so, it is all about stuff. 'maximize' is open to interpretation. you sure maxmize the holes in your car with this mod

I just went through Partsman's IMD thread yesterday, and there is quite a good bit of info over there. Enough that it made me go home and start hacking on my shroud
I do have some ideas on how I want to make mine unique, but that's a different story.
On one note, if there was a way to force the air under the stock or GP intercooler, wouldn't it create a vaccum and help suck/force more air to be brought through the intercooler & out back underneath? I really think this could help maximize the top mounts even more.

intersting focus on product introduction.
who was it that first posted about
the Jesus head ?
the M62 ?
and thats just two that come to mind. Numerous vendors/developers have used Mini owners who happen to be NAM members to test, refine and obtain input. In some cases these people just happen to be the first ones to write a check or just love the participation aspect or contribute to get a part (free or discounted). In some cases the vendors restrict that the data not be shared, in other case they don't care, they let the data stand or fall on its own.
Knowing this we have to factor this into anything read posted here on NAM.

I can see that point, but why I think it could work is when I was out the other day blowing leaves around (with a leaf blower), if I put the nozzle right above the pile of leaves, it would shoot the leaves out, and then start sucking the surrounding leaves in, and shooting them as well (created a surrounding vaccum). So I wonder if this theory would work for the IC as well. I don't know. I'm just thinkin'... :impatient
This entire thread is starting to feel just like so many others in the past. Someone tries to post something about what they've done to their MINI and if it happens to be M7 the same group of people come in and start beating the thread to death.
Its gotten old and the result is that people stop wanting to share anything they've done...with a part from M7 or anyone else.
I'm not saying that the merits/design/results/etc. can't be discussed but this is crapping on someone else's thread. Create a different thread and argue amongst yourselves. I'll bring my popcorn.
