With a Built by bones Roll bar would the top side airbags still work?

any air bag you that may have that goes off during a crash, with a roll bar, the roll bar will be in the way. but i would think that the air bag will just move around it and expand from there. you could remove the air bags to save weight and the chance that the air bag could hurt you all strapped in. at the point you add a roll bar, it's not really a street car anymore and is moving it's way out of daily driver status.

There's a saying I read on a BMW Forum once related to this:

"If you can't afford to lose it, you can't afford to race it."

Words to keep in mind. You cannot go into a race worrying about whether you'll be able to drive the car afterwards.

Hell,

If I need a rental car to get home, so be it ....LOL

I may just put in the minimal roll bar- NOT a cage, to satisfy rules and to hook my harnesses to

Lets face it... The MINI is not a real race car

That is why I have the 100 mile AAA tow package Willow Springs , California Speedway and Button Willow are all within 100 miles of the house I was just at California Speedway today doing a Eurotuner Magazine event. The last part of the contract said if we or the Pro driver damages the car Eurotuner is not responsible . Many people turned down the offer to participate in the event becase of that but after I did my two lap sessions and when WIl Turner got out of my car from his session and said " I would race it as it is " the risk was well worth it Track days are generally a lot more safe that playing on public streets so in my opinion you are taking a lot less of a risk on a real race track .

In Will's case I felt pretty comfortable More than his national championships it was knowing that he had put over 20 bottles of M7/ Venom NOS thru his personal mini made me realize that my car was in safe hands. Hhad a bit of fun on a ride along with him as we chased down and passed a super charged track M3.

Certainly, but the quote refers to actual racing, not track days, where the likelihood of contact is significantly lower. I was under the impression this was the Road Racing Discussion forum...

Guys, you have to be more aware of how you set up your belts. This setup would not pass any inspection I've been to. If you have a bar like this then use it. These belts need to be attached to the horizontal or at least go over the top of it. Also don't cross the belts like this. Not to mentiom that the straps are not laced in right at the adjusters.
All of these requirements don't come at a low price, they come from others who have been seriously injured or have lost their lives.

Not quite sure were you are going with this but I will play along. I was agreeing with you that if you can't afford to lose it you shouldn't RACE it. The same thing applies with any type of aggressive driving in my opinion. If you can't afford to fix or lose it don't do it. Track days are safe up to a point. There were several cars from yesterday that will be in the shop being fixed today. There were no crashes or contact this time but we both know that that also is a part of all types of track events. The unfortunate Carrerra GT incident that occurred earlier this year at the same track I was on yesterday comes to mind. Safer than the streets YES , still taking a bigger chance than normal YES as well. As for this being a racing forum yesterday actually was set up in that manner . This will all be detailed in a upcoming Eutotuner issue but the idea was for the owner of the car to attempt to turn a faster lap than the designated Pro. The winner gets $100. Sounds like a race to me

Do you have any pics you could post for us. Sounds like a great day at the track. I also believe this forum is more than just professional road racing but I guess Greg (Onasled) would have to clear that up. I think his intent was for all types of road events inclueding HPDE schools.

I was under the same impression as were you regarding thread content . As for pics it was covered by four magazines , Eurotuner,Super Street , Turbo and one other but I forgot the name. It was put on by Pirmedia but I was invited by Eurotuner.I only took a few personal pics which would be boring to the forum I would think. You know the usual type standing with Will Turner like we were best friends . He is a great guy by the way and damn tall. Nice to see a guy about 6'4" can fit in a mini with a helmet on. He said the mini was the most fun of all the cars he drove so that was one vote for the good guys. In any event it will all be out in print shortly.

Thanks Randy, look forward to seeing the articles about the event. The second part of my previous post was meant for IanF. Hope you understand it was not directed at you. Thanks again.

Personally, it doesn't matter to me if the discusson belongs in the Road Racing Forum. Hence the " ". It's not the first time a thread has been off-topic and for sure it won't be the last... and it's close enough not to matter... Hell, I'm jealous of all of you who can drive your cars on the track.

I only know personally a couple of people who regularly track their MINI and I'm pretty sure they own their cars outright.

No problem We are fortunate to be in an area with a variety of tracks nearby to take out the toys when we get the urge or extra cash. I agree with you that the decision to take such a " chance " is easier if you don't have to think about making payments on a ball of metal in the back yard.

To be honest I didnt even hear our results but I can tell you there is no way I was faster. The only guys that had a shot were the ones that had a car that was so unique the pro could not figure it out in the 5 alloted laps that they were allowed. For example I did hear that Sam Hubernette the Viper drift driver could not turn a faster time in one guys Mazda miata but he did a hell of a job flat spotting his tires. That guy will need the $100 towards a new set of tires LOL . Will Turner ownes a mini and runs NOS in it full time. He was no stranger to my car and it was a treat to see him work his magic from the sidelines or even more fun actually from within the car. He is SMOOOOOTH >

I have a Mark McMahon bolt-in rollbar in my E36 M3, and a friend has one of his full cages in a J-Stock 325i. Beautiful work, yet it's all done in a small workshop with simple equipment. A question of experience, skill and fine workmanship.

I think that in every region there's at least one preferred cage/rollbar builder, you have to ask around.

As someone said, in the BMW world Autopower does not enjoy a good reputation. I'm sure their products are solid and safe, but the ones I've seen are a very sloppy fit in the car. This makes for easy installation but way too much intrusion of the tubing runs inside. I haven't seen an Autopower for the Mini, so this may not hold true for that application.
