Can't receive text messages on the nav system ... ?
Hi there:
I just bought a JCW Paceman with the nav system. I am using an iPhone 5S with the current iOS (yes, it is also paired thru bluetooth already), and it appears I should be able to receive my text messages on my nav system. However, the booklet says go to Office and I should see the following: Contacts Messages Calendar Tasks Notes Reminders. I only have a contact option, nothing else. Can someone help explain this to me? Thanks! |
I would like an explanation too. Where does the compulsion to read 'text' while operating a motor vehicle come from? There is a very strong feeling that texting and driving is a direct threat to me and my family's lives and I resent the current cultural apparent disregard for responsibility shown by compulsive texting and driving.

Fly'n Brick:
I asked about why my nav system is not accepting my text messages, not about why I can't, or shouldn't text and drive. The nav system provides people with complete hands free. In fact, I don't have to even turn my eyes to look at the screen to see the texts (or read them). If I can hook this up correctly, the system will read it to me, and I can then respond using my voice. Be well. Kevin.

When I open the Office program from the Main Menu it automatically takes me to my "Contacts" screen and nothing else. When you're on that screen, push the joystick to the left (towards the driver's seat). That should bring you to the screen with all the options you listed above (I only get contacts and messages....I'm on an Android so maybe that's why). Then select messages.

For me and I haven't looked into it much, I get SMS messages when my ip5 is plugged in and not over bt.

The fact that manufacturers are flooding vehicles with more and more technology cannot deny the proliferation of inattentive drivers focused on 'what-up' instead of paying attention to traffic. Anecdotally speaking, I rode with a guy to a meeting recently who was visiting with the passenger next him. Even one on one this idiot couldn't keep his eyes on the road while chatting and we spent as much time in the other lane as we did our own. I ain't riding with him again!

On my iPhone 5 in the Bluetooth menu under the Mini there's a checkbox for "Show Notifications" maybe turn that on?
One thing that my Windows Phone did better than my iPhone was on incoming texts it would act like a phone call, and turn the Bluetooth on and say "Incoming text message from <name>. Would you like me to read it?" you could then say Yes or No, and if you said yes, it'd read it to you then ask if you wanted to respond. Really really miss that, as it did allow me to deal with incoming texts when I was driving. The iPhone doesn't even chirp if it's connected to Bluetooth so I don't know unless I pick up the phone and look at the screen that I've had one, then I have to hold the button and ask siri to read it to me. |
Wrecks: What cable do you use? I called Mini, and the Phone is not supported to send over SMS at this time. So aggravating.

The Y cable that comes with Mini, plus i bought a 30pin to lighting cable.
|
Oh! So it will work if I plug it in and then I can get my text messages? I have the 30 pin to lighting adapter. I don't know if they gave me the Mini cord you speak of ... I don't see one. Aside, they never gave me the entire booklet in the glove with operating directions. And getting one is proving to be a nightmare.
As I said, "Thanks for my 40,000 dollar car ... " Geez.

Suppose to come with one. When I picked up my car it wasn't with the bundle of stuff they gave me. Had to ask where is my y cable and he grabbed one from the parts department.
