Messed up my differential 13’ countryman

I started off needing to change the driver axle on my auto base model. Couldn’t get the inboard axle cup out of the transmission to save my life. Had the brilliant idea to remove the passenger axle and try to hammer the driver side out through the diff. Difficult area to see and I was exhausted. I hammered the cap covering the back of the axle splines into the differential. Swear it looked like the axle stub from the other side.

I’m assuming those caps are inside the differential for a reason. The splines in the differential where the axles stub into are bone dry. Without that cap fluid is probably going to leak out of the axle splines. Going to pull the transmission and open it up today. I believe I see those caps in some of the rebuild kits I see online. Have the rebuild manual ordered already. I have previously rebuilt an aisin transmission in a 4runner that’s still going strong to this day so it shouldn’t be too bad.

Got the transmission out today. 4 hours to remove it and 30 minutes to remove the bell housing and differential. Very easy to open the differential and press in new caps. They come in rebuild kits you can find on cobra transmission or maktrans which is based in Poland. I believe the transmission is the Tf60sn 09G but I’m waiting for confirmation. This transmission is used in Audi, vw, skoda, mini etc since 2003.

Just bought a full rebuild kit with clutches and steels from wolfsburg tuning out of Florida. Was about $295 shipped. Already have the trans open so going to throw some new parts in it. Currently at 120k miles.

Damn. Thanks for posting the photos. Is it anything like older American cars which required some serious levering to get the correct preloads? Nice job fixing it. Diffs are tough.

Nah nothing like those. Just remove all of the bolts with an impact, remove a pin with a magnet and slide a bar out. Then all of the gears come out.

Also this is possibly a TF61sn model transmission. Hard to tell since they don’t stamp the transmissions. Mini designates these as 6F21WA. Mine might be slightly newer or older because the paper sticker on the case says 6F21VA. Who knows can’t get a straight answer from anyone. Rebuild kit I got is for the 6F21WA.

Finished rebuilding the transmission and installed it into the car. Pain in the ***. The frictions I received for the B2 clutch pack were the wrong thickness. Spacers and sealing rings didn’t fit. Pan gasket was incorrect. Other than that everything else was fine.

One strange thing is the stand pipe that came with the car is yellow. Can’t remember the exact size but maybe around 35mm. Bought a new one from mini and it’s purple and only like 28mm. Too small. Rebuild kit came with 2 more stand pipes and they’re both too large. Hard to get the correct parts because of so many variations in the transmission.

Transmission runs smoother than it did brand new.
