My 2013 came with a name tag. The first time she got serviced, the MA asked for her name. It's kind of a thing. And no, you do not need to be a master tech to work on a MINI.

Lighten up, Francis and quit being such a dickbag.

Sorry MINI techs are not master techs, they are trained monkeys, one trick ponies.
They read from the manual on procedures based on complaints.
Can not think independently regarding any diagnosis.

Ive spoken to a few, and cant believe what comes out of their mouths.

I never did until this one, it’s just kind of a fun thing that a number of owners, fully and vocally encouraged by MINI, do. Heck it even says to in my owners manual, lol.
I may very well be near your parents age as well....... get off my lawn!!

As to my other issue with the surging, after a couple of emails back and forth with Arric and a reminder to watch the video on wastegate adjustment, I’m pretty sure I’m making way too much boost right now and it’s the ECU trying to dump it before hitting limp mode at the boost cut-off. I used Dash Commander tonight for the boost gauge, and under 1/4 to 1/3 throttle acceleration I hit 17 PSI between 3000 & 3500 RPM. And was easily hitting 12 PSI at 2500. It goes from nothing to BOOST! Fast! I’m sure I was hitting the safety cut-off when it went into limp mode on me while testing it the other day, I also had some misfire at higher RPM yesterday (which it turns out is also an issue when running too much boost) and a code for excess boost (something like that). Go Figure! I’m an idiot! So tomorrow I will adjust the wastegate to lower the boost and hopefully not be Grumpy for a while :-)

I HAVE BOOST!!! It’s amazing! Lol.
The car is running fantastic and feels powerful and fast, and I LOVE it! Thanks to everyone here for the advice, help, and crossed fingers during the whole debacle that was dealing with MINI USA & BMW NA. I appreciate it all, and could not have completed the project without your contributions!

Now about that airbag issue! I now have my Schwaben scan tool, but cannot clear the fault, which is leading me to believe that it must still be active. I’m getting the code 93C8 related to the drivers side airbag control (I think). Does anybody know anything about this? Where is it located? And could I have done something to it when I put the front end into the service position? I’ve also discovered that my battery appears to be not long for this world, I’ve heard that a dying battery can cause strange faults and codes, I really hope that’s what this is, but I doubt they are related unfortunately, but who knows?
thanks
the Grump
Hey Grump... After reading through this thread again, I noticed you never said what was causing your surging issue, and what the fix was? Do you remember what you did to fix it?

Thanks dude, I appreciate the apology.
Not everyone does it, but a lot of us do.... it almost a requirement with some enthusiast clubs. And it’s just another way to personally connect with the car, unless it’s just an appliance to some.

Yes, it was surging because it was way over boosting. The surge, I think, was the ECU using the diverter and wastegate to try to dump boost, before the fuel-cut.
Once I got the wastegate adjustment right, it went away.

The only thing that I would have done differently if I had to do it over again, would probably be a little better downpipe, even though the CNT fits (mostly), I have since installed several for Mariokart and his are just so much better!
And I would have done the tuning at the same time. The new turbo was nice and gave it small bump, but the tune really made it come alive!

Anyway to get together and ask MINI USA to extend warranty for 2012 and later R60s? My 2012 MINI Countryman S ALL4 has the same problem when the check engine light turns on when driving on the highway and I did hear the sound of metal rotating at around 70mph when throttle is not pressed. I heard both 2012 and 2011 MCSes are covered under extended warranty and I have no idea if mine is also covered. Besides, what if I so not fix this problem and just make it non-S version of countryman? Also, I think turbocharger is still working anyway.

I got the same problem as MrGrumpy on my 2012 R60 S ALL4 with 47k miles and I got my turbocharger replaced under California Emission Control Warranty.

The turbo will continue to function, but not hold Boost it will bleed boost and when it gets below minimum boost threshold it will trigger the CEL or until the flapper completely fails and the system sees the failure and puts you in Limp Mode until repaired

I know this is an old thread, but i was wondering how these mods affected your fuel mileage. I'm facing the same issue as you with my CEL and needing to replace the turbo. I like the fuel mileage I currently get and was wondering if you had a significant drop in fuel mileage after this

Your MPG really depends on the mode you're in and your right foot functionality (LOL). The sacrifice isnt anything significant either way

I have only had this for about 5 months. It started off only coming on occasionally when pulling a hill if I forgot to downshift. It's becoming more and more frequent unfortunately. I have about 102,000 miles on it. It's just frustrating lol. I may just live with it for a while as even aftermarket turbos and install kits start at $1k

Yeah it’s going. Mine isn’t that infrequent it only goes on when I try to pass some idiot and I need a lot of boost. Tear down of the front end to replace is a nightmare so there’s a lot of labor involved
