What Fluid for Transfer Case

Thanks in advance, this has been a great resource so far! 2011 Countryman S All4 and I'm having the AWD transfer case replaced. Just trying to find out what transfer fluid to use as I can't find a straight answer.

I've been told it's a GL-4 Transmission fluid, so Redline D4 or BMW GL-4 Fluid (a 75w GL-4 fluid) will work. I'm thinking using the Redline D4 will be ok since it's a GL-4 rated fluid for transfer cases, and was told the same by a few fellow mini drivers but want to get some other opinions first. Thanks!

Hi MTBatmanMINI! Checked with our resident expert and recommends BMW Synthetic Gear Oil 75W-90 or API GL-5. About 0.5 liter capacity on the transfer case.

Hope this helps! BTW, welcome to NAM and hope you will be posting some pix!

Drive Hard. Drive Safe. Keep Grinning.

had my fluids changed at the dealer a couple months ago

manual trans fluid 83-22-2-339-223
xfer case fluid 07-51-2-293-972 SAF-XO synthetic gear oil
rear diff fluid 82-22-2-295-532 G1 hypoid axle oil

there is a note on w/o ... "changed rear diff drain plug per repair instructions on ista"

MTBatmanMINI,

I'm having some wierd problems with my Countryman. Can I ask you why you are having the transfer case replaced?

Ditto here on the why with the transfer case... I have a 2012 Countryman S All4 with 62K miles. My transmission is making some racket. She still drives fine but my spidey sense is going off. I called Mini and asked about changing the fluids and they told me they do not change the fluids as it isn't necessary which doesn't make sense to me.

2012 All4 s also!

Double ditto.
I have a 2012 with 48000 mi with vibration only at 60-75 and the main drive shaft (1000$) was NOT the cause. Now I smell diff grease! I think transfer case failure i imminent. Opinions welcome!

my mini dealer has changed my rear diff, center diff, manual trans fluids 2x for me, every 3 years or 30k miles as my friend that owns a transmission shop says.

the rear diff and center diff (transfer case) use the same fluid.
castrol saf-xo, a gl5 75w90 rated gear oil.

the manual transmission uses mtf-lt4 75w90 transmission fluid.
