Engine malfunction and fan running long after car is off...

Well looks like I'm the newest member of the club. I've had my Countryman S non-4 for a month, JUST hit 2000 miles when I was driving home last night and got an the "Engine malfunction:reduced power blah blah" error. I was about 10 minutes away from the nearest Mini dealer (10 minutes before they close). Just as I was turning onto their street the error went away. I never actually felt a difference in the car while the error was on either. My SA believes it's the thermostat issue and I made an appointment for Thursday morning.

After some hunting on the forums I also now realize that the fan running for a few minutes after the car is off all the time probably isn't normal either (which it's doing since I took it home a month ago, so I assumed it was normal). Otherwise the car seems to be running fine. Just of all the weeks for this to happen...I'm moving this week and really don't have time to deal with this.

Probably your thermostat sensor... Your car may think it is running hotter than it really is, same thing happened to another owner that I met at a dealer... I saw her on the road a few months later and replacing it fixed her problem

My fan runs for about a minute after turning the engine off. It has done this since the day I brought it home. I take it this is abnormal?

julz, I didn't get the reduced power with my thermostat issue. I would take it in soon. The error codes are stored in your key fob.

If it is the thermostat, it may come to a point it won't start.

The fan does often run after the car is off. But at a low speed and not for too long. The thermostat issue had mine running at full blast for 5-10 minutes after just a drive around the neighborhood.

Mine is definitely running at full blast. You can't carry on a conversation in the garage when it is going through its post-drive cycle. A 5 minute drive to the end of the street and back might not do it, but anything else will.

Ok, got my thermostat sensor replaced today. Diagnostics indicated that the thermostat thought it was running 17 degrees warmer than it actually was. The fan still ran a bit after I got home, but SIGNIFICANTLY lower, I wasn't totally sure it was still going at first. So hopefully this is a one time fix, but I'll keep things updated if I have any more incidents.

Hope you're all fixed up! I know you said you just got it, but just to clarify, is your car a 2011 or 2012?

First thing I did on delivery of my 2012 CM was to install a Scangauge II, which will display digital temperature reading (among may other parameters). If it starts reading much higher than 222F or so after normal warmup (or especially BEFORE warmup) then something is probably going wrong with the thermostat temperature sensor. So far all is well.

I took my Mini Countryman 2012 in for servicing and they told me there was a recall on the thermostat sensor. The sensor was corroding too fast and causing a false reading of the car running hotter than it really was. This triggered the post ignition fan running. Once they replaced the sensor…all was good.

It's a factory recall but hasn't been publicized much. If you take your MINI in they will tell you then.

Just had this happen to my CMS. Started up the car and got a check engine light. Read the code and called out a coolant thermostat error and the fan would not turn off. Water temp displaying 420 degrees (using DashCommand) but the engine coolant was only lukewarm to the touch. Reset the CEL light by clearing it and the engine returned to normal operations and the fan turned off. Planning to take her in and get the thermostat replaced.

Haven't heard the turbo cooling fan for quite a while now,
after pulling into the garage.

Its been really cold here in Pittsburgh.

Should we always hear it?
Or is it possibly cold enough not to be an issue?
