2014 CountryMan S: Engine Operating at reduced output....

Hello, I have been receiving the "Engine operating at reduced output. Possible to continue. Drive with caution. Have the system checked by the nearest MINI Center." message on my wife's 2014 Countryman. The message displays intermittently and I do not notice an actual reduction of power or any other difference in the vehicle while the message is displayed. The most common time I see the message is just after filling the gas tank. Most of the posts I have read on this error message seem to point to a faulty high pressure fuel pump. My local Mini dealer is saying that it needs a new turbo. However, based on the fact that they quoted me $4000 to replace the turbo and immediately suggested that the best route may be to trade in for a new car, I am having some trust issues with them and will not be returning. Has anyone else seen this error in correlation to a faulty turbo?

I have tried hooking the vehicle up to my Cen Tec OBDII scanner and I am not seeing any codes related to intake\turbo\exhaust etc.. I have read that a special BMW scanner may be necessary to read some of the errors properly in this vehicle. Any advice on how to properly diagnose this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

This happened to my 2013 Countryman S, but I definitely did notice a massive drop in power. It would clear after I turned off ignition and restarted, but It would eventually come back. The dealer took care of it under warranty, and as I recall, they replaced spark plugs, injectors, and coils (can't recall if it was for all cylinders or just a couple, though).

Does the car have a rough start-up idle, then once warm it settles?

Have you tried gunning it and the the power cuts out, or reduces?

You may be on the right track, it could be the HPFP. It's common to prematurely fail on these cars, and MINI even released an extended warranty on that part due to it being so common.
