Blinking and then solid engine light

Mini is down right now and hopefully not for the count.

Engine was perfectly normal this morning, driving to work, until I started uphill and pressed on the accelerator.

Check engine light started blinking and then went solid. The car went into limp mode, shook pretty bad as I pulled over quickly.

I have no idea what is wrong (assuming it was misfiring for who knows what reason.)

It's at a shop so I hope they can scan the code to see what is wrong tomorrow.

Pretty bummed. Its a 2012 R60 S All4 with only 46K miles. It's stock and does not get driven hard.

I am hoping it is just coils and plugs! Good luck to you!

What did yo read your codes with? I have an OBD->usb MX adapter, but am not sure what software I need.

Wifi box

I have a wifi set up in the car that plugs in to the same port. It's through my cell phone company. Funny, I got it for the kids so they could play games/watch videos. Anyway, when any error code is received it logs it and defines it.

Diagnosed as an ignition coil.... a $32 part from Rockauto.

I am having to pay 290 to have a shop do it - because I do not have a code reader.

For my F150, I have an SCT X4, IDS and Forscan. I can do anything and everything. With this MINI, I feel helpless given I do not have the basic tools needed.

Can anyone please recommend a good code reader? Also, is there software to read/write asbuilt data?

Thank you!

I have a generic wifi ELM OBD access point that plugs into the car, and I use the Carly app to read out the controllers. Works great for getting the Mini specific codes. If you get the "Official" Carly OBD dongle, you can get freeze frame data and live data streaming, if you care about that stuff. If you just want to read codes, then the generic one works fine.

You can also perform coding with the Carly app.

This is the actual one I have, purchased in 2014:
Amazon Amazon

Looks like its not available anymore, but I'm sure any of the other similar products will work just as good.

Glad to here it was just a coil. Rough that it costs so much more than the part to make the repair.

Glad to hear it was just the coil! I'm waiting for mine to show up as well, going ahead and replacing all 4 and the plugs. I'll keep you posted.

Wishing you well,

Will

So awesome that it was a quick fix, do coils have a shelf life? Are they all the same?

Coils and Plugs replaced

Replaced the coils and plugs, all is good in the mini hood! LOL! The problem is fixed and the countryman is running so much better. The plugs looked very worn and the coils showed their 40,000 miles.

The coils came with with a lifetime warranty!!! Plugs were limited lifetime... not 100% what that means... but I kept the receipt for both of them. Now all I have to do is clear the codes!

My question is, what is the factory recommended replacement for plugs and coils?
