Well I’m not an expert, but I think what’s in your hand there looks broken. Just kidding. But now that you have the valve cover off, and pieces of the guide in your hand. You should check the chain to see if it’s stretched out of spec or not. I have seen a procedure for this somewhere online, but don’t remember where. Hopefully someone else will know what to do to check that. At the least, you need new guides. Pull the oil pan and get any pieces out of there. Or say “to hell with it” and just replace the chain too while you already digging around in there as a preventative measure. Good luck. I’m following with interest to see that thing come back to life.

Yeah not a biggie lol...I love working on these cars. Instant satisfaction lol
My plan is to remove the tire and hand spin the engine to check timing. Timing chain is out of question for replacement. Oil pan will come out to fish the broken pieces.
Touching the rollers indicates no bending...fingers crossed.

There is no need to read codes because the battery was dead and I'm pretty sure I'll have more codes that may not pertain to issue...The way I handle this type of situation is simply check the mechanical parts make sure the basis is correct, like the timing. looking around the engine for loose connections and such. In this case, here what I found: for some reason the tensioner got stuck/seized causing the upper rail to break resulting in timing going crazy. after we replace these components, then we can try to start the car and pull real codes. So far, the rollers seem tight, so I'm optimistic.

Right on. That’s a heck of a deal, if you wanted to flip it for a quick profit, or keep it, and now you have nice R60 to add to the stable. Looks like a net positive either way!
