Code Reader / Programmer and App

I have to clear codes from our R60. What is the easiest reader / app combo? I have an OBDLink MX WiFi that I use with my F60. Are there any apps that I can connect to?

Jwanck11 12-13-2018 06:25 AM

nobody reading codes?

MrGrumpy 12-13-2018 09:17 AM

I use a Schwaben scan tool. Aside from Carly, which I have never used, I’m not sure if any of the other apps out there will read the proprietary BMW codes. Somebody else may have one that works, but I haven’t used any other than dash command which won’t do it, but is great for monitoring things since MINI graced us with the multitude of gauges in the R60....lol.

I'd check out Bimmerlink if you have an Iphone/Ipad. The authors Bimmercode is a great app for F series cars, so it probably is a good app for R cars. A few of the free apps initially worked on my R60 and then stopped working so I can't recommend any of them. Carly seems to have changed the way the charge for the app so that may not be a winner.

The Schwaben would be good for both R & F60's and will do a lot more than just read/erase codes.

Thank you!

I have an OBDlink MX - but software to interface to the R60.
I am looking at the following:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Schwaben-by...obDu:rk:1:pf:0
https://www.ecstuning.com/b-schwaben...020sch01a~scf/

All are from Foxwell - do any of these look like (are any of them) what you have?

Minnie.the.Moocher 12-13-2018 01:09 PM

The ECS one is what I have, same as the other ones. Only a lot cheaper at the moment, that is what I paid for it.

MrGrumpy 12-13-2018 01:36 PM

I have the one from ECS as well, it comes preloaded with the correct software for our Mini’s

Is it worth the $10 or so difference to go with a Foxwell NT520 over an NT510 ?

MrGrumpy 12-14-2018 08:21 AM

I can’t say, I’ve only used the Schwaben version, but I’ve noticed that it’s gone down in price a good bit, iirc I paid closer to $250 for it about a year ago

mikey_t 12-14-2018 10:07 AM

Foxwell makes the Schwaben unit and in reality they are all about the same price in eBay with the NT520 being $10 more. The Foxwell site indicates that the NT520 is a slightly new version.

I picked up this schwaben tool from ecs... Thanks for the suggestions!

That’s the one I have as well. You will be happy with it I’m sure. It has paid for itself several times over since I bought it. It can do a lot more than just read codes. Definitely a must if you plan to do your own work on the car. Thumbs up!

Owners manual on the Schwaben/Foxwell is lacking. That would be my one criticism so far. I spent way too much time just to figure out that my unit didn't need a software update.

Me too, when I first got it I tried to update it, and it was a bit of a hassle. And unnecessary, lol.
I looked up a couple things in it, but mostly I’ve learned about what it does by playing with it, lol
Just don’t start changing things! Investigate the options with selecting them, lol

I use a BT OBDII reader (Android phone and tablet) and the Torque Lite app, it's free.

Looks like I waited a day too long to order the Schwaben scan tool. Yesterday it was 30% off; today it's only 10% :(

You could buy the Foxwell version on Amazon for less money at this point. Maybe ECS will price match that for you to make you happier. Saves a bit of cash.

ECSTuning 01-07-2019 07:21 AM

Contact our sales team and they can help you out, let them know you missed the sale. The schwaben one we have is the upper level of software vs the standard foxwell.

MrGrumpy 01-07-2019 09:12 AM

I can’t speak for the Foxwell, but the one from ECS is ready to go out of the box, and is a very good unit.

dmath 01-07-2019 09:49 AM

Thanks —order placed for the Schwaben.
