R60 Cold Air Intake Suggestions
 

Hey All,
Just upgraded my '02 R50 to a '13 R60 All4 and I love the car, however my '02 had a great cold air intake from K and N, and for whatever reason they do not make a kit for the R60. Does anyone have a recommendation on who to go with? I saw the NME one on Mini Mania, but have not heard of that company before. Also, does anyone know if K and N is planning on making a kit for the R60? Thanks for all your help!

The trick to know is to look at the r56 cooper s stuff too, as they use the same engine and engine bay layout. The K&N typhoon will work if you like K&N. Other options out there include NM engineering, way motor works, VIP, etc. lots to choose from.

Just a quick heads up: Amazon advertises a K&N Typhoon kit for the R60. Don't order it! It's too large and will scratch up the firewall panelling. I'd suggest sticking with the small business specialists. The vendors on here know Mini better than K&N, and can give better advice.

Save your money intakes on the turbo cars just don't produce real power like they did on your old R50. Your money is much better spent on a tune or intercooler.:thumbsup:

You might want to consider an aFe Pro Dry S drop-in filter. Better air flow, and none of the oil coated MAF sensor issues. My CM actually lost power and started running hotter in traffic with a CAI. No problems since I went back to the factory setup with a better filter.

Agreed. While the turbo sounds were amazing, I think that the car feels stronger with the drop-in panel filter compared to the open element VIP i used to have.

The JB+ module is also a nice, affordable, easy to install upgrade for a few ponies. There are much better tunes out there (Manic, others...) for a bit more money, but for plug-and-play JB+ is great.

Isn't taking in hot air from the engine bay the opposite of "cold air intake"? I feel like I'm missing something crucial here.

ECS CF intake sure looks sweet. Anyone got one in their car, preferably a non-JCW? How's it sound, perform?

you could keep your eyes open for a used DOS intake ... i have seen 2 for sale in the last month ... the "race" version takes cold air from the stock tube plus from the cowl area behind the plastic firewall

Yeah, the DoS definitely seems the way to go if you can find one. Sure is a shame they shut down. How much modification to the cowl do you have to do for the race version?

Totally agree. This is the best real world advice. If the filter draws air from the same location as stock, it'll be a waste of money. Cold air isn't found inside the engine bay without a) ducting to direct outside air to the filter or b) custom heat shielded and sealed box...or both for best results. I'd just drop a better flowing filter into the factory box, unless you just want the sound and don't care about heat soaking. Matter of fact, I'll be looking up the aFe filter now that I've learned about it

Does anyone know if the AEM intake kit for the r56 n18 engines fit our countryman?

Here is my NM Engineering Kit. Looks and performs awesome, the fit & finish is exceptional, the silicone inlet replaces the flimsy plastic duct and also increases the volumetric capacity. You can keep some of the OEM plastic duct work that provides fresh air to the OEM filter area in place if you are worried about heat. I installed a Forge FMIC and have not felt anything but constant power, even after multiple, heavy runs...and, as others have mentioned, it produces some pretty sweet sound. But, also as others have mentioned, the CAI is a very small piece of the puzzle...tuning and FMIC will be your BBFTB.

Not really. The intake duct from the hood scoop on the R56 can't be used on the Countryman for obvious reasons, and there isn't a lot of reason to pay extra for the AEM kit without that. Makes more sense to just drop in a high-flow panel filter to the stock airbox — much cheaper, and most of the benefit.

Or go for the insanely gorgeous NM carbon fiber bits… :)

ECS CAI Not Cost Effective
 

The ECS CAI looks great! It does and kudos to the the design team and engineers for developing it. At the same time why should any R60 owner spend $499 on a ECS CAI when they can buy a Helix Intercooler for $599 and get real HP gains they can feel? By making the CAI so expensive ECS is making their CAI obsolete :eek2:

My opinion on this subject, the stock air box + K&N filter will do the trick for a Turbo engine, over the years I've own many sport vehicles that used an after market high performance air filter (great for sound) always thinking it would be better then the stock, however, every time prior to selling the vehicle I would put back the stock system, every time I realized that the stock system turned out to be as good or better then the after market kit.
So, for my Countryman s, I will keep the stock box + K&N filter within, I also noticed that both rear exhaust pipes are staying clean compared to the previous (stock) air filter. I also believe to get the extra ponies, a DP + Tune will do the trick for me.

Love this Alta and the price is quite reasonable, the sounds is amazing for sure plus washable sponge filter

I just have to ask, where did you get your front strut bar?
I keep searching for the R60 but am having no luck. I kept seeing that R56 parts fit our R60.
Is this true? :razz:

This is my first Countryman ever. So I have been doing my extensive research with previous knowledge plus all this new knowledge. lol
