VIP Heat Shield
For anyone that installed the VIP heat shield, does your shield have two or three bolts holding the shield down. I ask because all of the pics on the site show three while the one I received has two (the two on top of the steel posts). In addition, mine sits on the turbo on the frontside when attached. I am worried this will actually hurt the turbo. Help!

Editing after checking - deleted incorrect info. There are just 2 on my VIP heat shield where the posts go.
Sorry about the error earlier. |
edit: oops, I forgot I have the NM shield.
Mine has 3. http://www.chrunck.com/mini/CM_heatshield.jpg |
Just 2 on the VIP, I checked this afternoon. Sorry if I mislead you earlier.

FredoinSF is the front of your shield sitting on the turbo? Did you leave the Mini plastic wire dressing on with the heat shield and if so did you have to trim it?
|
Chrunck, I see that you were able to leave the Mini wire dressing on with the NM engineering heat shield, did you have to trim it to do so?

I did get the heat shield on without removing the spark plug cover, but future removal of the cover would require also removing the heat shield which I didn't really want. I later trimmed the cover so it will come off without removing the heat shield. The picture above is before I trimmed it. I'll try to get a pic tomorrow of it trimmed. |
i'm looking forward to those pictures too chrunck. thanks.
also.. i don't quite understand why (without modifications of course) the turbo heat shields and the wire cover can't be used together. i just don't understand the design problem here. there was another thread somewhere where someone modified their vip heat shield, which i THINK is made of titanium to fit with the cover. |
Have you not installed it yet? I didn't really understand the trimming either until I tried to install, and it quickly became clear. The holes already in the engine block are really close to the cover. Just take one of the ~3" posts that came with the heat shield out to your car and try to install it with the cover still in place. You can make it fit by bending the cover a bit, but it's tough and you risk cross-threading.
I think a new cover is only ~$30 so I didn't feel too bad about cutting mine. |
Here are a couple pics of the trimmed cover. You can't really tell the difference when it's in place.

thanks for the pics. i don't have a heat shield on my turbo, i've been hesitant on ordering one until i figure out what i'm doing for a cai, but i guess if dos doesn't release anything by spring i'm going with the vip.
have you noticed that the heat shield directs and traps the heat build up under the cover now since it's been cut ? *edit* does that entire bottom edge of the cover need to be cut or could it be slotted to allow the hs bolts to pass through ? |
I am sorry I don't know this but what does a heat shield do? Power? Mags? Or just dress up ?

My initial thought was to put slots, but it wouldn't really help. You wouldn't have to remove the posts, but you would have to remove the shield itself. I decided to just chop it off. |
Just call VIP Customs... They answer and are very nice. It's a much better solution than asking people who really know no more than you. While you're at it call Jerry T. at NM engineering.
Sliksunny, going through life having people tell you everything is a sad way to live. Use google, go to VIP Customs and NM Engineering's website and LEARN. |
Glad to see someone is in the holiday spirit! Not that it is your business, but I tried to call VIP and they are on vacation. So I thought why not get on the boards and see if I couldn't get an answer from all of the friendly MINI enthusiasts that come to these boards to get and give answers.
