Installing new Mini LED Fog Lights

I just purchased a set of Mini OEM LED fog lights from my dealer today eta is mid-next week; pricey but worth it imho.
Question: has anyone replaced their fog lights on a 2014 R58, if you did can I replace these as a diy project? I've been checking youtube, can't located a video on my specific year and model. I'm hoping I can remove the old and install the new through the opening located in the front portion of the fender wells; I assume this was place mainly to replace the parking/fog light bulbs. Appreciate any and all info.

You need to remove the front bumper it’s the only way. There is no difference in model years with the coupe. I done the job myself and it takes a couple of hours ensure you have some new clips as the ones that hold in the wheel arch liner are a sod to remove and the screw head rounds off Plus the clips under the front of the bumper can snap.
If you search for the Forge motorsport R58 intercooler filling guide it has an excellent guide for removing the bumper

Jeffijaffa,
Mahalo for your response and the link, greatly appreciated. I'm starting to think this may be more than your normal diy project for a novice mechanic as I am, not to mention the investment on the speciality tools involved.

No specialists tools required mind you. Is pretty easy to be honest
There was a full installation guide on this Website

http://www.minitorque.com/forum/f12/...y-guide-34506/

but the pictures have gone so not much help
Good luck If you go ahead with the install it’s well worth the effort and saves a few pennies

It may cost a fortune just to replace a broken one including labor even from an independent shop.

Last year, I asked a quote to install OEM driving lights. Nobody was able to give me an idea so I passed.

Richard: I'm hopeful the quote I receive from my LMD will be w/i the targeted amt I have for the install, I have a fixed total amt (matl & lb) for the entire project. Also I have/know my LMD's cost per hr. I already received a generous % reduction on the led drl kit. I will update this post sometime later this week on the outcome of this project.

Wayne - If you are able to take your time, replacing the foglights isn't too tough. The process essentially breaks down into three overall steps:
1. Bumper removal and mounting the new lights
2. Routing the wire through the firewall
3. Connecting the wires in the driver footwell

These steps can be done separately.

The only difficulty I had was finding the correct wire in the footwell. The only "special" tool that I needed was a tool to remove the driver wiper arm....I couldn't wiggle mine off, and there isn't much clearance for a puller because of the hood. I used a puller from my local auto parts store, but replaced the **** with a bolt which gave me enough room.

There is a pdf MINI installation guide. Can't find it at the moment. Let me know if you need it.

Labor rates are very high at dealerships. How many hours did they estimate? Check with independent shops that specialize in MINI or BMW. Where are you located? Someone may have a shop to recommend.

5 hours is unreasonable, especially at exorbitant dealer hourly rates.
The DIY documented here is nowhere near 5 hours: http://www.totalmini.com/forum/18-20...ing-guide.html
The thread linked by ECSTuning mentions much more reasonable installation costs.

The link that ECS posted is the one that I used. There are two MINI pdf's....the original referenced an incorrect wire/terminal to tap into....I'm pretty sure the pdf that ECS has posted is the updated one.

ECSTuning - I launched/read the install instructions w/i your 78th reply on the post by CA-Sport. Actually there are several of this install instruction flying around the internet; I will bounce yours against the one I received with my lights. If there is a difference I will post same.
rkw - I read this post but have some sort of problem with bring up the photos of the post.
Mahalos to both of you for the information.

Yes, the one with the lights might be wrong, MINI released the PDF and then it was adjusted on our side to be right.

I did mine on my Roadster. Used a Helix intercooler installation video to get the bumper off. Only problem was a couple of hidden fasteners on the bottom edge of the bumper that weren't in the video. The light fitting was a few screws. The control box connects to a couple of nuts in the fuse box an zip ties (!) to the side. The one wire into the cabin is a pain to get through but not too bad. Laying on your back trying to splice the wire into the loom at the footwell module is just awkward and painful for old guys like me.

All in all, quite DIY-able.

Hi All; installed Mini's OEM LED DRL today, 2.5hrs. Didn't have to remove front bumper etc. Did following: Disconnected battery, Lifted and placed front of R58 on stands, Removed wheels, Loosened fender linings, Removed underside bumper trim. R/R lamps, Installed control unit and followed wiring diagram from instructions, Loosened left door sill strip, Detached footwell module, Connected A1 cable to pin 12 of plug X14261 tested complete.
Note: Dealer provided installation instruction published date 9/2015. Pay particular attention to the connection of the A1 cable to pin 12 of plug X14261, there are two identical plugs; the first time I chose the wrong X14261 pin 12; after looking at the wiring diagram I noticed the (not so visible) arrow pointing to the top X14261.
Hope this help's someone.
Mahalos to all who took part in the Post greatly appreciated.
Aloha, wayne

Yep, we have the updated document in that link, the original MINI PDF was a little backwards on the install part.

So I just installed this kit, per instructions given here. Gray wire on pin #12, no issues or problems during install. My car has xenons, 2013 hardtop.

The issue is that the headlights are on all the time, no matter what position the turn signal switch or DRL setting is in. I've parked the car in the sun, but the headlights are still on when starting.

Is this something that I did? Or does the car need some miles on it before the solar sensor calibrates itself and turns off the headlights? I distinctly remember pulling into the garage and the headlights turning on in the past.

If the gray wire got cut using the splice clip, would that result in the headlights being on all the time?

Thanks,
Mike

I confirmed that the gray wire was severed, so I butt spliced/soldered/shrink tubed the joint. I'm confident that there is continuity now. But the headlights remain on at all times.

Thats weird, double check the hookup. Auto do you have daytime running lights turned on or the on the wiper stalk turned down to daytime on?

Mike,
From your post, I assume the LED DRL you just installed are functioning as they should, the daytime running light option of your vehicle is deactivated via the onboard computer and your light switch is on position 3; if you answered yes to the above then I would place the light switch to positions 0 and see if your headlights are off. If the lights do remain off in positions 0; I would have the vehicle checked-out by your dealer you may be experiencing problems with the sensor associated with position 3.

aloha, wayne
