Turbo heat shield

Has anyone thought about installing a heat shield to protect the scoop from warping? The warping will happen unless steps are taken to prevent this. What type of shield will you use or have you installed? My S Coupe will arrive in two weeks and I want to be ready.

Warping was a problem with the plastic scoops + insulation of the original models, but the new ones have a proper pressed metal scoop, so no warping issues.

Very good to know --- But my dealer believes it will still happen with these scoops. They will replace the scoop with a heat shield at no charge but they will not install the shield untill the warppage. Go figure. Just hope the color matches ---

Mini changed my scoop today because it is warped. The clips seem different, and they added a shield under it

Hey Davester,
Yea, our experience with the warping occurred on a 2010 MCS and noticed the start of an issue around 2,000 miles. We have the chrome painted scoop. Dealer was very quick about ordering a new scoop and including a new "heat shield" piece of insulation on the underside of the bonnet. I have seen some folks are able to get the carbon fiber one instead of what they had in the first place but we elected to just go with what we had. Since the heat shield install, no issues. Not sure about getting it replaced BEFORE a problem, though. You'd think that makes sense, right!? :>

I had the same issue when I bought my mini, so I ended up getting the carbon fiber scoop.

I plan to get the MINI OE scoop heat shield at some point after Christmas. It's about $30. Not a big rush as it is quite cold outside now.

According to MINI the chrome scoop now MUST be used with the heat shield. I guess it warps more easily.

I don't think this is true. There were rumors of a different type of material used but it seems that the scoops are still plastic. Pretty sure mine is plastic and there is no insulation under the hood, but I will check tomorrow. New cars have some holes in the scoop to allow some ventilation. There is definitely a lot of heat escaping those ventilation holes.

saw today that my scoop is warping. . . just called East Bay Mini in Pleasanton, CA they adv that the new scoops are still plastic but the have a heat shield installed. They are ordering the scoop. It comes primed and they will send it out to get painted. So they expect it to be ready some time next week. After I got off the phone, I thought about it and it's such a hassle to have to take my car in for a product defect. Some people have had to keep taking their car in because of this. I'm going to call MINI North America at 866-275-6464 about replacing it with a CF scoop instead.

Mine is definitely plastic. WHEN not IF mine eventually warps I suppose I'll replace it with the CF version.

My Coupe arrived at the dealership Friday evening. I asked for the heat shield to be installed before I take possession on Monday. Saturday, I had to go and look, they had installed the black driving lights and grill badge holder (they had to change the grill to accommodate the lights). To my pleasant surprise, they had the shield installed too. Oh happy days---

Cool! Hopefully I stand corrected. It seems I've read so many stories about warping heatshields I assumed I'd be replacing mine sooner rather than later.

I looked to see if mine has a heat shield, there is a painted metal plate covering the underside of the scoop, the plastic scoop is not visible from the inside of the hood, I suppose that it is the factory heat shield.

Also, before I was aware of the melting scoop problem, I wrapped the hot side of the turbocharger with an insulating blanket. I got it from Way Motor Works

I took us 30,000 to warp ours in California (most of it was spent in LA). . . Or maybe it's that I finally learned how to drive my MINI.

I decided to not take any chances...

http://www.nm-eng.com/254/11/0/2608/...at-shield.html

It costs a buck fitty but after a four hour spirited interstate ride to see Way in Atlanta this past summer, my scoop was only warm to the touch, not hot.
