Why no LSD with Auto's

Is there a reason the combo of LSD and Auto isn't offerred together? The auto doesn't do somthing similar on it's own, right? Is it just a physical issue of getting it all in the car together?

yes

I think you will only get speculation here as to why LSD is not available with Auto. Perhaps it's technical, perhaps a marketing decision, I doubt anyone here would know.

r56mini, it seems that automatic transmissions have gotten fairly efficient. Added to the fast shifting is the possibility of a better launch by cranking the revs up with the left foot on the brake and popping the brake.

I understand that, speculation is all I'm really looking for. It's probably all I would get from the dealer too, but I would rather hear the thoughts for a group of enthusiasts then an individual sales person.

Due to the size of the auto versus the manual, I could see a technical reason why LSD is not offered. There simply may not be enough room for both. That is just a guess.

I agree with R56, I think he's spot on:thumbsup:

It's also possible the auto is faster since it's not dumping boost between shifts as the manual trans presumably does.

Why no LSD with Auto's

A properly set up Auto trans will always win in a 0-60 or drag race. Look at the professional drag racers, or your high end sports cars like Lambo, Ferarri, Porche, Etc. I drove an auto before this purchase (2006). Loved the car, but the auto trans/paddle shift was disappointing to me. It was all show- no go.

The LSD should be offered with the Auto for people in the snow belt. It would be very beneficial.

My opinion, is that the reason it is not offered, the auto trans is not strong enough to take the abuse of torque with spirited driving,

r56mini Apr 7, 2007 04:17 PM

LSD will allow more power to the wheel that grips more. But I think more force is exerted on the power train when both wheels are gripping than when LSD is giving torque to the gripping wheel. I mean more abuse will be done to the torque converter in the straight line acceleration than when turning or at speed.
