Charging Malfunction

I was on a road trip yesterday when the Battery Warning light came on and the message 'Charging Malfunction'. I pulled off the highway and shut the car down and then restarted it, The light and message disappeared but returned shortly after driving again. I decided I would keep driving and eventually I lost all engine power and almost every warning light lit up like a Christmas tree. I ended up having the car towed. I am wondering where to start. Should I start with a battery replacement? I am not sure how old the battery is. I do have a Foxwell Scan tool to register the battery. Or should I go a different route? Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

Do you know if the IBS connector is disconnected, does it bypass and the alternator should be putting out full charge?
