How to reset Adaptations?

2009 Cooper S with the Aisin 6-spd auto developed a bad shift flare from 3rd to 4th. Long story short: changed entire tranny and everything was fine, until I spun tires on wet pavement with DSC off. Now the problem is back. Shifts perfect in all other gears but 4th. Downshifts fine too. Just the pause between 3 and 4 is too long and RPMs shoot way up, then when it engages, jerks the car. That plays hell on the clutches, so it needs to be fixed ASAP.

I believe I just need to reset the transmission adaptations, but I can't find a tool to do it. Tried the $200 Autel scan tool and the $500 Foxwell Automaster with 0 success. No adaptation options. What do I need to reset them that doesn't cost $1000?

We have many customers use the Bav Technic software as it is affordable and will do it.

You might try this reset procedure - I think it's the same transmission:

That's just what I need! I see this works on 1 VIN only, so if I wanted to use it on another car, how much would that cost? Does it write that VIN to the cable somehow?

If you wanted it to work on more cars you have to buy the upgraded version that does up to 3 VIN

Does this mean you can't sell it to someone with a different car? Where does the vin get stored?

It gets locked in the dongle.

The latest software update for the Creator scan tool can reset adaptives also. You can find it
HERE HERE
for $76

You have to reset them all individually but it's cheap and easy.

I think I'll get the version for BMW +other cars, so I can at least read the trouble codes on my other vehicles. It's only like $20 more. Read some bad reviews on it, hope they're one-offs. My $400 Foxwell code reader couldn't reset the diagnostics, but was a phenomenal reader. But I think it's a bit much to pay to just read live data and erase trouble codes.

So I got the Creator scan tool, and it can't clear the adaptations. Says it's "not supported". Maybe it justneeds to be updated, I'm not sure how old the software on my unit is. Going to get in touch with the seller here shortly.

I had to update mine from their site and then it was able to do it.

So the trick was, you had to have the car running. I tried to update my Creator tool, and it updated the OBD part, but not the BMW part. That one kept failing. However, I was able to go into the Adaptations and clear them. It asked me if I'm sure, and gave me some other warning. Then it just cleared them and said "Done". However, I did not notice a difference. The shift flare from 3-4 is still very much there.

Is there some sort of sequence you must do to set the new adaptations?

After you reset the adaptations shut the car off and walk away for about 10 min. The main relay will shut off and it will complete the process.

I have an R50. Will the Schwaben/Foxwell 510 reset the fuel adaptions? I have tried without success. If it can reset the adaptions on an R50 do you have a procedure?

I have code 2097 (post-catalyst O2 sensor was reading too rich) which I can't clear. I want to use this procedure below which was posted by joey1320.

for that code you don't replace any o2 sensor. the issue is with the adaptation values for the dme.your dealer will have to do the following since they have the proper diagnostic tools.

tell them to check/clear the code.
reset the adaptation values.
do a "quick delete" before disconnecting communication between diagnostic equipment and car.
disconnect the battery from the car.
do a battery reset- touch both connectors that go to the battery posts with with a wrench for a minute.
let battery sit disconnected for 1/2 hour.
reconnect battery.
check to see if code is gone.

if not then do it all over again and let the battery sit longer. maybe an hour.
the dme has to reset the amount of fuel it delivers to the engine, which is causing you "rich"code.

that should take care of it. good luck!
i just fixed a car with the same code today by doing this, so it should get you going.

I purchased the Bavarian Technic single VIN set-up.
I need to reset my CVT adaptations, was unable to find a video that confirmed I select [Clear CVT distance adaptation].
Can you ease my mind and confirm that is the proper selection?
Thanks in advance!

No joy. And no support from Bavarian Technic. Do not buy their cable software combination.

i see this as an old dead post but in case someone comes along with similar issue and since i have recently worked on my tranny, in order to fix the flare from 3-4 you would have had to adjust the N282 valve body selenoid pressure valve this is accessed through the tranny oil pan.. in your severe flare case you would turn the adjustment screw on it 2-3 turns counter clockwise this would increase the pressure and this would stop the flare. not sure how permanent this fix is I will try to update in a few months.in my humble opinion shift adapts resets would never fix a severe issue like that.cheers
