daily drivers only - OEM heatshield on/off?

If you daily a stock or modified R56 turbo; Please let me know if you:

A. still have OEM heatshield over the turbo (or aftermarket)
B. have no heatshield at all

Assuming you cool-down before you park the car/shut down, I dont think there would be any adverse affects. I would like to hear what others are doing and any issues you may have encountered (heat related or otherwise).

Thank you

Leave it on, its there for a reason. Especially since you are running Stage 2 tune.

OR, if you want to melt your valve cover, you can take it off... your choice.

+1
Don't forget about bubbling the paint off the hood!

cornjuice 07-09-2018 12:31 PM

obviously i wasnt clear enough - i dont need/want opinions from everyone. Ive edited so that OP says clearly "If you daily a stock or modified R56 turbo; Please let me know if you:

A. still have OEM heatshield over the turbo (or aftermarket)
B. have no heatshield at all"

without this information your words are a waste of everyones time/life/bandwidth etc. Thank you.

I daily drive my R55 Clubman. (same engine) I still have the OEM heat shield, have a cat-less down pipe installed, run Manic Stage 2 map B, AND I have an AEM heat shield in place. I would NOT want to run without the OEM shield. I am even considering purchase of the Way Motors turbo wrap to keep heat more under control.

Heat shield

Stock heat shield, with a WMW turbo wrap. Mods are in my profile.

WayMotorWorks 07-10-2018 07:22 PM

DO NOT drive without the heat shield you will melt the valve cover.

Our most popular thing to do is run our turbo wrap under the stock heat shield. Then I run the open scoop grill with the hood heat shield.

Never without heatshield, at least wrap and turbo blanket

ECSTuning 07-11-2018 12:25 PM

+1 heat shield always on.

bugeye1031 07-11-2018 05:04 PM

WMW blanket, OE shield, NM shield

DneprDave 07-11-2018 05:48 PM

Me too, OEM heat shield over a Way Motor Works turbo wrap.

Kfriceman 07-12-2018 08:50 AM

The fact that this component has the words heat and shield seemingly makes it an critical part but to answer your question mine is in place.

The turbo wrap will improve the efficiency of the turbocharger by keeping the heat inside the turbocharger. A turbocharger is a heat engine after all.

cargusjoh 07-12-2018 03:41 PM

I thought keeping the turbo cooler so the charge air is heated less would be ideal. Maybe that is too logical?

cornjuice 07-12-2018 06:03 PM

@ ohioJCW - THANK YOU! I know of only a few folks that run with no HS (you are now the 4rth) that have zero problems. A lot of why i want input from others is, I suspect its driver related and not the vehicle at all. **For example, I stay out of boost most of the time in my commute; if/when i do pound the throttle I always cool down below 950f EGT before shutting down the engine. I dont think I have as much risk of melting something as say.. someone who doesnt have temp gauges and just drives however and turns the car off like its a vacuum cleaner! ;p

**Thank you for everyones input so far

Heat sheild on R57 Stage 2 RPM tune

Have a miltek akrapovic 100cel DP, I ceramic coated it before install....removed, cleaned and scuffed up the OEM heat sheilds before these got ceramic(rattle can) coated treatment...reinstalled.
Looks great, runs cool ...

Only the exhaust side of the turbocharger should be wrapped, like the WMW turbo wrap does. Not only does this keep the heat off of the compressor side, helping to cool the charge air, but it also keeps the heat off of the oil and water cooling lines in the bearing pedestal, extending the life of the O ring in the oil lines and helping to prevent the oil line from coking up and plugging.

I have no external gauges, and I literally beat the ever living piss out of my car on my short commute daily (much to everyone's dismay )... proper maintenance is your friend. And will always be your friend.

BTW.... I just rolled 90k on my JCW
