Something is running under the bonnet after the engine is shut off !

When I get home from a long drive or even a trip into town I pull into the garage and put the car in park. I let it idle for a few minutes to cool down the turbo. Then shut off the engine. Lately I’ve been opening the hood to keep the hood scoop from warping but mainly it’s to let the heat escape from under the hood. When I take my R56 JCW in for service I’ve always told the MINI service writer that I would expect the electric fan to come on after shutting off the engine but I really don’t hear it or if it DOES come on. They tell me that it is only supposed to come on at a specific temperature but tonight I really listend and I thought I heard something running and felt hot air on my face when I got close to the source. I stayed and kept listening until I heard a few clicks then whatever was running shuts off and then silence.
I guess my question is : Is there an auxiliary water pump keeps circulating water or a electric radiator fan that is on after the engine is shut off then shuts off after a few minutes.

Yes I believe so. There is an auxiliary cooling pump that circulates the coolant at shutoff . Since it circulates I would imagine that it moves the coolant to bring the heat off of the turbo thus allowing the turbo to cool down better than without.

I was thinking it was the electric radiator fan but , I don’t ever remember hearing that turn on at any time after the motor is shut off. Good to know the auxiliary water pump is running to cool down the turbo. Thanks for the information.

Ok . So that explains the noise I’m hearing but yesterday it was hot around 90 degrees. When I got home I did my normal routine by letting the engine idle for a few minutes. Shut it off. I heard the auxiliary water pump was running but I never heard the fan run at all. According to the link you provided me to open and read Dekliber said the fan is by far the loudest thing he has heard. Is this something I should take in for service ? It’s still under warranty so there’s no charge for repairs.

If i run my MCS hard the fan will run after shut down same goes if i was in start and stop traffic for awhile. If you have access to a decent scanner you can pull up your coolant temp and see where you're at. I could be wrong but normal operating temp is 220 degrees

I used to hear the electric fan come on after car was stopped, just started to use mini again have not heard fan after shutoff.

if I run the car hard temperatures the temp stays cooler below that 220 degrees, stop & go gets a lot hotter?

is there a spec for fan to come on once car is shut off?
