2007 sporadic CEL & sporadic jerking on acceleration / deceleration

2007 Mini base model with 103k miles on the clock & AUTO transmission

Something triggers CEL (check engine light) about once or twice a month and then it goes away after a few days

Also the car has very distinct (but sporadic) jerking when accelerating AND decelerating.

I pulled the CEL code (with a generic OBD scanner) - it was something that had to do with Bank1 timing

Both camshaft sensors were replaced with new Bosch units about a year ago

Also, just for the hell of it, I removed and cleaned the VANOS solenoids. That didn't seem to help at all. They did seem a little loose. I am not sure whether there is a way to test those solenoids for proper operation.

Also, when we got the car about a year ago, we didn't realize how much oil it burns and as a result we did run the car LOW ON OIL for quite a while.

The jerking problem seemed like very loose engine mounts. However, I took out ALL engine mounts and they seem to be in very good condition, absolutely no rips.

Any advice on what to test and how to diagnose what needs fixed greatly appreciated

I believe there should be a way to test the VANOS solenoids and test cam and crank sensors? And also is there an easy way to see whether the timing chain jumped?
I would greatly appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction. Thanks.

I dont like to see a post with no one participating.

Since the issue was with bank one timing. That means the vanos is acting up. To test it, swap it with the front one (assuming bank one is the back) and see if the code moves with it.

To check timing, you need to find the cranckshaft locking hole. Once lock in place amd the valve cover is removed, see the orientation of the camshafts. Looking to the right end of Each cam, there are Three flat sides and one rounded side. The middle flate sides need to be leveled.

Post pix and we can better help you
