Starter replacement questions - can't it out of the car!

I am in the midst of replacing the starter on my '11 MCS and have it all unbolted and disconnected (pita to get at the bolts!) and now cannot get it past the various half shafts, and cross bracing. Any suggestion on what is the orientation and place to get it out. It's close to being able to go out right below where it is mounted but I can't figure out the puzzle of which way it should be oriented. Its like one of those brain teaser puzzles as a kid!
