2007 mini cooper timing issue

So I have noticed a rattle in my mini for about six months kinda like a spark plug arc. Any way recently I went to start it at work it had to crank a couple extra times to start I drove it home about 10 miles and parked it. A couple of days later I went to move at and it cranked for a long time to start and when it did it will idle fine and then drop idle and Im getting a lot of exhaust noise from the front and very little power at all it will cut totally out if I let it. Any way I hooked it up to the OBD and I got the camshaft position timing retard error and I know now that its the timing chain and I ordered a whole new kit for it. I was just wondering if the timing chain going bad would cause that much of an idle problem and loss of power. Thank you for any help in advance
