not the typical dash rattle...i don't *think*

so i've done some searching and read a bunch about rattle behind the dash. i have one, but i don't think it typical.

the rattle i'm getting could also be a rumble...it's coming from something morotized. i can be sitting at a traffic light, and something will "kick on" and i'll get this crazy rattle/rumble from just behind the speedo. it will last 1-2 mins and then go away, usually while i'm moving.

since it "kicked on" i thought maybe it had something to do with the AC compressor, but i hit the button and no change.

any idea what it could be? other than the ac comp, what could "kick on" while sitting still at a light?

anyone, anyone?

Can't see where you are from. Warm or cold climate You mentioned ac. And since its like 1 degree in NY. I laughed.

There are actuator flaps in the dash for vent control for both heat and ac That's why I asked.

We may need mor info. Like while driving, idle, accelerating, how long it lasts, at start up etc etc

Your profile doesn't say where you are, but assuming some place warm, there is an electrical cooling fan that kicks in when the engine is getting hot and needs additional airflow not available while sitting at a stop light.

I can usually hear it kicking it, and does sound like a little rumbling min jet engine. If you can pull over and open the hood, you will see it spinning and producing air turbulence right behind the radiator, in front of the engine.

a

P.S.: If you are some place cold, like NE or Canada, than the above scenario is unlikely this time of the year :)

thanks guys. i think in my searches i was getting hung up on "behind the dash". i'm pretty sure that what i'm hearing is the PS Pump fan. due to it's location, you can't really see it unless you are under the car, and when u are in the car it sounds like it's coming from behind the dash.

my ps pump is leaking looks like, so i need to address that now...thx.

to check the PS pump fan, you can just climb underneath and unplug it to see if the sound stops.

Haha, I noticed this after I replied to it.

For it some reason this thread popped up as if it was new. Maybe based on my other searches? I guess I now understand how other people do it.

I hate to drop a new opinion in this thread, but it sounds like alternator whine to me.
