Justa Coopers: When did you replace your clutch?

My '08 had nearly 100k before I sold it - original clutch
My '13 has about 12k, nowhere near needing a clutch, but I'm trying to get an idea when others have been replacing theirs.

I believe we have the same clutch as the S, not 100% sure about that. The fact that we make zilch in power probably helps the life as well.

Only 22K on my '13, so no input from here...but will be interested in the data.

36K and change on mine so far, no sign of needing a clutch.

Maybe never...........

Should last well in excess of 100,000 miles.

My 09 is at 29k and my clutch is slipping. Taking it in tomorrow, Just bought it at 27k. Slightly concerned

that's impressive - did the gen1 use the same clutch as the gen1 mcs?

N2MINI 12-18-2014 02:58 AM

Not sure. The first 4 years I drove it pretty hard with local club events, Phil Wicks Driving School, Auto-x, Dragon events twice a year, BMW Center stuff, etc. Now I don't do as many of those event because of work but it's still my DD..

I've been driving manual's for 39 years and haven't replaced a clutch yet.

51k on my '06 R50, learned to drive standard on it 30,000 miles ago, drive it like I've got S Envy, and no trouble (knock on wood!)

probably would have needed to if you kept the same car

There are too many variables involved for a valid answer.
How many times is the car started from a dead stop?
How often is the transmission shifted?
How aggressive is the driver with shifting?
How experienced is the driver with a clutch?
For example: My car has 87K and I’m on my original clutch. My service tech recently checked things out and indicated all is fine. I just did my first brake pad replacement.
BUT - the vast majority of my driving is long distance at freeway speeds. Very few shifts. Not much stop and go driving. I’ve been driving vehicles with clutches for 50 years. I pamper the clutch.
Another vehicle that sees a lot of stop and go driving would likely have faster clutch wear.
Someone who is an aggressive driver would likely have faster clutch wear. My technician told me a story of a brand new clutch that was destroyed in a single weekend by drag racing. There was an rather unhappy father looking at the results of teenage abuse.
I suspect (although I have no facts to prove it) that there is probably a correlation between brake replacement and clutch replacement. However, I have no idea what that replacement ratio would be between the two items.

I still have my 1977 Datsun 280Z, which I've driven for 37 years and 165k on the clock on the original clutch.

jbjones85 01-03-2015 08:08 AM

114k on my 08 s with original clutch and still going strong.

Sabini 01-03-2015 12:47 PM

My 2010 has 148500 and the original clutch!

Rckstrgrl21 01-03-2015 12:59 PM

I just replaced my entire clutch (slave/master cylinders, flywheel & clutch) in my 2003 mini with 107k

I'm hoping it was a fluke and my 2011 will outlast the 2003

kyoo 01-07-2015 07:22 AM

any autocrossers able to chime in?

EMKFLYER 01-07-2015 07:51 AM

I have a 2008 base Cooper with 145,000 miles. The clutch is slipping at highway speeds when I get on the throttle.

Doing some research now on replacing it. What is a fair price to have the clutch replaced?

N2MINI 01-07-2015 09:31 AM

Dealer is probably $2200 or more
Good Shop $1200-1600
DIY $400 and up- all dependent on parts used of course..
