Don't reset computer oil interval if changing more often?
I, like many others, change my oil in between the dealer changes. I changed at 1000 miles and then at just over 5000 miles. I have not been reseting the computer and I assume I should not so that the dealer will get every other change from here on out. Is this what others do that change between?
I use Mobil One 0w40 and oem filters. |
Yes, even though I am well past the free maintenance period, I don't reset the interval
on the "in between" oil changes. This also keeps Inspection 1 and Inspection II reminders on schedule instead of advancing them unnecessarily. |
I changed oil and rotated tires early once 3 years ago so now every time the odometer shows a 5 with 3 zeros or a 1 with 4 zeros I know its time, easy peasy. That computer thingie is on for only a few seconds and my memory doesn't register that long enough between runs to the donut shop to make a lasting impression.

Dealers will change the oil after 1 year if you have not reached the OBC mileage. Since I drive less than 15,000 miles a year, I change my oil every six months. I pay for every other oil change. Doing it this way makes the time and distance between the oil change consistent and I feel the MINI oil is good for at least 7,500 miles. My dealer only resets the mileage to the next oil change on the scheduled service.

I also do the change every 5k miles, as well as rotate tires. I don't reset the computer, and let the dealer do one out of 3.
