Codes P1338, P0011, P0014 after multiple resets.
Hello I just purchased a 2007 Mini R56 base model with 112k highway miles. The check engine light is on. I have codes P1338, P0011, P0014 after multiple resets. I hear no chain rattling noises in the engine what so ever. The cars surges and idles poor on start-up and seems to lack power in the low rpm range and will occasionally stall coming to a stop when cold. I changed the 2 cam position sensors around and still have the same fault codes. I took the valve cover off and visually inspected the chain, chain tension and guides and saw no problems. I thought I may replace the chain tensioner before going deeper and more expensive even though no noise. Can anyone shed some light on my issues and what I should try next? I try to avoid the dealership and do the work myself. Below are some of the common answers to the codes based on some research.
P1338 Camshaft Position Sensor bank 1 open circuit or short to positive. This could be is a failure of the Camshaft Position Sensor or a short in the wiring? P0011 camshaft position timing bank 1Can you reset the cam timing ? P0014 - Camshaft positioning sensor actuator B timing Could this be timing chain jumped or stretched? Incorrect camshaft timing Thanks,Wiring problems (harness/wiring) in intake timing control valve control solenoid system Continuous oil flow to VCT piston chamber Failed valve timing VANOS solenoid (stuck open) Mellomini |
Do you know if the chain was serviced? Also have you tried do a reset?

I have no service history details on the car. Yes I reset the check engine light multible times. Thanks, Mellowmini |

place an order for 2 new Cam Position Sensors

You need to try replacing them with a new one.
I just place an order for 2 new Cam Position Sensors today. I will install them and report back with my findings. I am hopefull that it will correct the problem. Thanks, Mellowmini |
Good luck.

New Code P115D
Hello,
I change out the cam position sensors and it may have eleminated the codes P1338, P0011 and P0014. The engines power came back. Now I am getting the code P115D. (P115D Mass or volume airflow A too high) I tried to clean the mass airflow sensor. I also unpluged sensor and the engine just dies. I also checked for unmetered air leaks and found none. Any suggestions on what to do next? Thanks, MellowMini |
Well you are getting there. Glad to see the sensors worked out.
Now as far as your code P115D Check your intercooler hoses and make sure they are on tight and the clamps are secure.Check especially the passenger side. |
* MINI DTC P115D (0x2774, 0x2B55, 0x2B57, or 0x2B5B) - Mass Air Volume (MAF) Flow 'A' Too High
The ECU is seeing, via the MAF sensor, too high of rate of air being pulled into the intake system. - Erik |
These are air system related codes. Make sure all the boost tubes from the turbo intake to the throttle body are tight. Check the tubes on the intercooler.

However, he should check the intake tubing and manifold for any leaks or loose connections. - Erik |
On a base (Justa) model, as mellowmini noted in his first post, there is no turbocharger and therefore no boost tubes. Hello I just purchased a 2007 Mini R56 base model |
Hello Braminater, The check engine light came back on with the same codes P1338, P0011, P0014, P115D after multiple resets. So I decided to remove the Vanos solenoids. When I removed them, I was shocked to find that the screens were clogged with aluminum metal shavings. The previous owner seems to have ran the car low on oil from the leaking valve cover gasket I just replaced. Right before I found the metal shavings, I had changed the oil and the filter at a station with mobile 1 synthetic and the tech mentioned it was dirty.
I have now cleaned the screens and reinstall the solenoids and change the oil and filter once more. The car seems to now run great now and so for no check engine light. I am planning on change the oil and filter at every 50, 100, 200 miles intervals several more times and see what happens. The engine seems to be running normal and no unusual sounds. I am worried about the engine scoring and the metal shavings and would like to find a way to get all the metal out of the engine quickly. Does anyone have a suggestion or commits? Thank You, Mellowmini |

I aquired it for $3500 from the original owner that gave me no details other than she thought the engine had a problem.

I did not take any the first go around. I will send some pics of the next oil change. I will also remove the Vanos solenoids again and inspect it for more shavings and take a photo of them as well and post it.

Hello Braminator,
Yes I took a big risk when I purchased it. MelloMini |
I got the P115D code again after multiple resets. I can’t seem to find any air leaks and everything looks in order. There is no vacuum noise present. The vacuum plumbing is real basic because this is a non-turbo model. I plan to check to the brake booster, intake manifold and the PCV valve and the end of the PCV tube that goes under the intake manifold. Is there anything else I should check?
The car is now running well and has lots of power. I checked the VANOS oil solenoids and they only had a few very fine flecks of metal present on the screen. This seems to be a good sign. I will change the oil for a third time this weekend. Thank You, Mellowmini |
What is the steps to reset the ECU on the R56?

I am assuming that your check engine light is on and you would like to find out what the codes are and clear them. Here are steps and options.
I hope this information helps you and good luck. MellowMini |
So did you get this sorted out?

Mellow thanks for the info
