brake pad recommendation?
2007 S, daily driver. Want low dust, low noise.

I'm planning on going to a set of Cool Carbons sport pads on my MCS. I had them on my old 01 325xi touring and they are awesome.

I got Carbotech Brake Pads Bobcat Street @46000 km. I'm at 53000 km right now and I love it. It's a bit expensive but its worth it. Right now my rear pads generate more dust than my front pads. Even if there is dust, it's a lot finer so it is easier to remove.
It braking feels exactly the same as OEM. No squeeky noise during cold days. |
We've been using EBC Redstuff pads on customer cars with great success. I highly recommend them.:thumbsup: They are low dust, great bite, quiet, and very cost effective.

I'm a very satisfied EBC Redstuff user. For the first 500 or so miles, these pads are very dusty, then almost nothing. You get better stopping and no brake squeel. I've had Carbotech Bobcats and they tended to be noisey.

Bought TexTar Ceramic all the way around for my 06 Cooper S for only $89.75 off of ebay. Very low dust and so far not a squeak. Did the change my self, was very easy (i use to be a VW mechanic years ago) but even if you are not that mechanically inclined, still a easy job.

I've had good luck with the Hawk HPS pads on a different vehicle, but try the Hawk Ceramic. Little to no dust, no noise, and very gentle on rotors.

Carbotech Bobcats here as well. They squeak in the summer. Also had my wheels powder coated flat black. What brake dust??

Got EBC redstuff pads (and Zimmerman drilled rotors) from WayMotorWorks, love 'em. Low dust and what dust that does stick washes off very easily. Way recommended them and he is correct, excellent pads. My Mini mechanic loves 'em also. Said the rotors and pads are an excellent upgrade from stock.

Put Hawk HPS on mine with Centric Rotors. Far less dust than OEM Pagid pads. Initial bite (initial braking) is not at strong as the OEM, but they HPS will still pop your eyes out of your sockets. No noise either! :thumbsup: Rich

Way Motor Works put on some EBC Red Stuff pads on my car last week. About 600 miles on them now and I have no complaints. Of course they need to settle in a bit so you will get some dust and squeels for a little bit, then it goes away.
But they are great non the less |
Oh also I have the Way Motor Works slotted rotors up front and TSW flat face rotors in the back to pair with the EBC Reds

I put akeebono euroceramic pads on mine. I've put about a 1000 miles on them and my wheels are still as clean as can be. No noise whatsoever, and supposedly very rotor friendly. Akeebono are oem for mercedes and some other euro cars.

Would the EBC Green Stuff pads make more sense for a daily driver? The car has only seen the track once. Would they be less harsh on the rotors?

Email or call Way at WayMotorWorks, he can tell you more about the type of pads you may want. I'm not familiar with the EBS greenstuff pads since I've never used them. I don't believe the EBS redstuff pads are hard on rotors since there is no metal in them.
They have very little brake dust and what does accumulate on the wheels washes off very easily. I don't race my car either but I wanted pad/rotors that where a tad better than stock. |

Red - 42' greater stopping power, lower dust, serious street driving, ceramic, a little longer bedding in process. Green - 30% less dust than OEM (more dust than the reds), more rapid bedding in process, comprised of kevlar rather than ceramic. Either are good choices, not a whole lot of difference other than the reds seem to be a tad bit more aggressive and LAST longer. I've got the reds and slotted rotors (but you can use either on smooth rotors as well) and I love them. |

I really like these pads as well - much better than stock IMO. I have tried the Hawk HPS on my WRX and did not like them.

Green has more initial bite at lower temps but can have fade when stressed. Reds are better at temp and under higher temp will have less fade.
I currently have EBC Greens (powerslot rotors) on my MINI and they are a nice pad. If you are just a daily driver and don't really push it, they are perfect. |
Actually we found the Reds to have better initial bite than the Green. And they have less dust and better high temp stopping than the Greens. The Greens aren't bad, but the reds are better. We've had several customers that had Greens and changed to the Reds and all have said the Reds were better. I know EBC says they are for fast street driving but they really are a great daily pads, that can handle your fast street drving.

Only drove on the reds once so I wasn't sure, was just going off of what others told me. That being said, I planned on switching to reds on my next change. |
