R56 whats your reccomendation on snow tires?
whats your reccomendation on snow tires?
I no this has probably been covered but i want to ask again. I live in Rhode Island and i'm looking for a good snow tire. I was looking at the Michelin X-Ice XI 2 and some people say there not good in light snow but great in deep snow. Anyone ever use theses? What are your opinions? Any other tires i should be looking at? Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Thanks
I went through three winters in Colorado with the OEM all-seasons and fared fine.
New MINI now, and I'll be swapping to Blizzaks after multiple raving reports (current vehicle only has summers). Nokians also have a great reputation.

+1 on the Dunlop Wintersport 3D's - have them on my BMW 525 wagon and on the MINI Great tire and wear very well.
3 Winters on the General Altimax Artic, tires are excellant I use them on all 4 wheels and have yet to get stuck.

CR gives some good information, however when it comes to tires everyone has there own taste, kind of like shoes. I think alot depends on how, were, and what you drive and also the climate and conditions you drive in. I live about 1000 ft above sea level, and have a very steep driveway, with little room to get a running start, I also commute in the very early hours of the AM, just about 1 Am or so, and most of the time the roads are not plowed, so i am in fresh snow, but dont see much ice, so again just my opinion, you really need to see what works best for you.
CR is fine if you're buying a toaster, they once downgraded a Corvette report because of no back seat. LOL. Funny, but true, I wouldnt buy car parts based on a bunch of armchair foggies opinions.
I'm currently checking for winter tire. With what I read, my choice will be between michelin x-ice, continental extreme winter contact or pirelli carving edge.
continental will be very good in deep snow and hard conditions (I'm in canada, we have some very hard storms here)
Michelin will be better on ice and slushy conditions
Pirelli is between the two others, and studdable. And the guy told me this one is more rigid (it feels more like a summer tire on the road)
There is also the gislaved nordfrost 5 that could be a good tire, but it cost too much here. With a good price, I would consider

+1 for Nokians. This will be my second season with Hakkapeliitta R's, and they're great.
I had a lot of trouble getting Michelin X-Ice and Blizzak's in stock MINI fitment sizes when I was shopping around. Maybe that's changed now. The fact that the Haks came in the right size, and were very highly rated closed the deal for me.

I was looking for what is probably my fourth set of Firestone Winterforce. Dirt cheap and classics. I settled, because of size restrictions, on Blizzak WS 60. Just arrived yesterday and they look very aggressive, and of course are very well reviewed.
This is not an armchair matter for me. Bob Vogel, David Thibideau, NoNo Annette and I are are running the ALCAN 5000 in February, then driving home through the Canadian Rockies.
Hey! If you are getting new snows, why don't you come along with us!

I have Blizzack WS60. If you look at tirerack.com's user reviews the blizzaks have twice as many reviews as the michelins with people reporting better snow/ice traction across the board. They fall short in the dry traction, noise and treadware catagories.
Bottom line for me is that I have 2" of ground clearance and drove through 140" of snowfall last season and never got stuck.

Not stuck in that picture, just plowing the driveway.

I have the Pirelli Carving Edge (with studs) mounted on a dedicated set of wheels. I live in the mountains of WV and my MCS is my only vehicle, so I needed something that would both go and stop. The Pirelli's fill that bill for me.
