What's keeping me from buying a $500 exhaust?

So this morning just scrolling through you tube I listen to a video of a Cooper S with the OBX exhaust and it sounded just like other top brands in my opinion. Other than 2.25" piping why wouldn't you buy this exhaust if you can get it full for around $500? Do you actually lose performance? I just wonder If anyone knows any facts about this exhaust?

And why does Alta not sell a downpipe anymore...?

AXO Jul 28, 2011 06:07 AM

No power loss. A lot of members run OBX. Some members have the mind set that you get what you pay for or some just want to run the best quality they can find. Me personally, I went with a custom Magnaflow system. It cost me about $500..... The only difference is my straight pipe is aluminum and not stainless.

I think you already made up your mind. Your holding yourself back. Go for it. You won't regret it. It will be one of the noticeable mods you can do to your Mini.

Also I noticed in your signature that your Mini ran 14 in the quarter. Do you have an auto or stick and what was you 60ft times. That's pretty impressive for your mods.

6speedwtneed Jul 28, 2011 08:33 AM

Manual. And I think 2.3 in the 60'. I'll have to find my ticket. That's with all season tires at 25PSI in them

6speedwtneed Jul 28, 2011 08:37 AM

Thanks for the advice. I might actually consider it. I want the ABF one... But $1,400 is killing me. Do you think you could run a stage 2 or stage 3 tune from Alta and be fairly safe? I probably wouldn't run the tune until I went to the dyno to make sure the AFR was okay. =\

Boosted_Mini Jul 28, 2011 08:45 AM

Wait.. 2.3 60ft.. that means with a 2.0 60ft you can run a 13.1 roughly.

Cause every .1 off your 60ft is .2 cut off your top end time as well.

Well that's what they say... And .3 less would be .6 less lol. = 13.4 seconds. One guy on forums with my set up with ABF exhaust and their tune ran 13.7. But then again I honestly drag better than the average person.

Boosted_Mini Jul 28, 2011 08:55 AM

I thought its done as .3 on the 60ft and .6 on the top end for a total of .9? Maybe i am wrong. Even a 13.4 is respectable for a stock turbo Mini cooper.

Ugh i need to get my tune.. haha.

6speedwtneed Jul 28, 2011 09:00 AM

I'm pretty sure it's .1 in the 60' is .2 in the total time. Not the top end time. That's what I was told when I was taught drag racing on my Kawa 636.
Yeah the accessport alone if you can drive amazing can drop your time from 14.9 to like 14.2-14.3

Boosted_Mini Jul 28, 2011 09:03 AM

Yeah, I am looking into tuning options and have been for a few months. I am just not sure if I really want an OTS tune or if I want a custom tune. I am leaning custom, but most people are pretty bad about customer service I have found so I may end up on the AP.

I am running out of a bolt ons haha.

I think the stock piping in the exhaust is 2.25" all ready.. you could probably get away with just cutting the stock muffler on and having a nice Magnaflow welded on in its place.

6speedwtneed Jul 28, 2011 09:06 AM

Yeah but the OBX deletes both cats and sounds good. And that's weight reduction.
Though it's same size. It's still catless. My Audi was a beast running full 2.25" Borla

Boosted_Mini Jul 28, 2011 09:10 AM

Oh you are looking TBE, got it!

for me I am all ready catless so I wasnt thinking about that part. haha.

Wow so 14 flat on stock exhaust. Geez.. I want to see this thing with some slicks and a TBE haha.

6speedwtneed Jul 28, 2011 09:15 AM

Yeah. I think the catback is fairly pointless in this Car. Definitely turbo back.
And yeah 14.025 on stock exhaust. Just FMIC, Intake, base tune, and WMW BOV

Boosted_Mini Jul 28, 2011 09:29 AM

Wow, hmm.. now i really need my tune.

Untuned and modded I held with my friends STi that ran a 14.2 so I cant be too upset and thats in utah at 4500FT.

Tuned I would love to see a <13.9 at the track even though I more so autox.

6speedwtneed Jul 28, 2011 09:53 AM

My buddies STI does 12.5.
And buddies RX-7 does 11.0

Hehe well we all know people with fast cars I was just referencing a comparison in performance. ;)

My stock turbo GTi went 12.9.
My friend LSX RX7 runs 10.6

I know a lot of fast cars out here. Would love to see the MINI in the 13s though. I think there is potential for MINIs to get into the 12s. (Turbo minis that is). I have devised a plan for it, just wonder if the drivetrain can handle it.

First if you but the ABF exhaust you will get their tune with it if you have an AP. Second you can find a catless DP and then make a catless exhaust and spend half the price and get a custom tune. You will be happy either way. Or find me a JCW Cooper Non-S body kit and I will trade you my JCW factory exhaust and a little extra cash for the body panels. As fars Altas stage 2 and 3 for the AP. I have stated in another thread that our MINIs are modded pretty close and I was told by Alta that with an intake, fmic, catless dp, and catless exhaust I will be able to run a stage 3 no problems. I will give it a try when I get back to see how it runs. Hopefully it runs fine but, I can always run stage 2 and not have any problems. There are a lot of ways that you can do what you are looking at doing and not spend that much or spend a good amount. It is all what you want out of your MINI.

Sounds good. So in 2 months I should have the whole OBX exhaust and been to the dyno to see results and check AFRs since I don't have a wide band O2

6speedwtneed Jul 28, 2011 11:57 AM

Also, I get 3 dyno runs for $50 so I'll run it once on each Alta AP map so everyone can know what's up =]

You can monitor AFR's in realtime with the AP...the R56 has a factory wideband and the AP can read from it.

If you datalog it, you can even plot the data on a graph if you are handy with Excel

And FWIW...if it is actually 2.25", that is smaller than stock.

6speedwtneed Jul 28, 2011 12:33 PM

Seriously...? What log is it? I must be blind. What's it called?

Lambda.....lol

6speedwtneed Jul 28, 2011 12:45 PM

I don't know anything about tuning yet lol. Just got my first little experience last week. Thanks much!

Boosted_Mini Jul 28, 2011 12:48 PM

Thumper,

Stock piping is 2.5?

Okay I'm going outside to measure this lol. I don't believe it

6speedwtneed Jul 28, 2011 12:55 PM

2 1/16" using blue-point dial-caliper. That is outside diameter of the pipe also and that was right before the muffler. Easiest place to reach under my lowered mini
