Demoic,

To summarize (probably poorly)...

- cold start chatter problem (which seems to be a problem with the timing chain tensioner), some have it, some don't, some fixed, some not

- high pressure fuel pump failures, again, several reports

- sticking sunroof in hot weather (and other assorted rattling, wind whistling noises)

- premature clutch failures, unclear whether it is really a qc problem with clutches or driving or what

- premature brake pad replacements, again, unclear whether it is a driving style issue or some poor qc

In my case, I've had problems, but none of those I listed, which seem to be the "typical" problems that continue to get reported here. Keep in mind what gets reported here are self-selected by those motivated to post something. Not real sure whether that maps to what the shops see coming in as typical.

And jmo, but except for a few folks, it seems most people consider the positives of the car to outweigh issues they have to deal with.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

Can the cold chatter be heard from inside the car? Also, can bmw dealerships do all the mini warranty work?

Yes you can hear from inside the car, and from what I have heard, no BMW dealerships will not do mini warranty work.

Sorry you feel that way. It really is a fun car to drive, but you must do what is in your best interest and I understand your concerns.

If anything, try hitting up the regional NAM boards, check the BBB, ask around, if possible do as much research on your dealer's service area as you possibly can. Your relationship with your dealer and SM regarding service and maintenance is so very important with the MINI Cooper, if only because of all the issues you may encounter listed above, down to the small annoying rattles and quirks you're likely to come across. The MINI Cooper is not a bastion of reliability, I'd say you're taking your chances more with it compared to other brands. Every car maker has its gems from the production line though, you may get a good one.
