I bought a gently used 08 Cooper and have some questions

Yesterday we picked up an 08 Cooper with 13K miles, it is Lightening blue, automatic, with premium pkg, sport pkg, cold weather pkg, blue tooth/ipod Usb ...we paid 16.9K From shopping around it seems like we got a good deal and I love the car. I am already thinking about getting a second one because I am not sure DH will get to drive this one when he returns from Iraq...my Volvo will definitely be parked for a while.

On to my ??: Can someone tell me where to buy the cable for my I-touch, I have searched the net without any luck. Also does anyone know where to buy accessories on the net at a discount, I need to buy another key and full price is crazy...I would also like to get the back window screens.

How about an extended warranty , any suggestions?

Talk about a good deal! Did you have to haggle the price down to get it to that?

Morristown Mini typically sells items at a 20% discount online with no tax, but you pay shipping. I have been able to quote their prices at my local Mini Dealership and they honor Morristown Mini prices. I use Morristown Mini for most OEM Mini parts/accessories. For aftermarket stuff, NAM has many supporting vendors and have frequent sales...18% off most stuff at Alta Performance this weekend!

Hope this helps!

You've got the disc-type key, correct? I don't know of an aftermarket source for them, they only come from the dealers. Each needs to be coded to the car and only the dealers have the equipment to do that. I think all the 08's came with two keys when new, did you ask the seller if they were certain they only had one?

Most extended warranties are profit items for the dealers. You're betting against the dealer that something will go wrong; if something expensive breaks, your bet pays off. If nothing happens, the dealer is money ahead. Most of the time the dealer wins.

If you have the stock Aux Input jack (as opposed to the special Ipod docking cable) you're looking for a cord that has two male headphone-style plugs. Sometimes they're called patch cords, all they do is carry the audio signal from the headphone jack to the Aux In plug. Radio Shack has them for cheap, and a lot of small audio electronics come with them for free.

What Ken said is correct. All 08s came with 2 fobs (keys). You should have both, if you don't have both, ask the seller for the second fob.

With 2 fobs, you need to trade the one you use the most out for the one that hasn't been getting used every 6 months. They do have batteries in them that charge when you drop them into the key slot. This is the best way to make sure that the batteries never die.

They tell you at the dealership how expensive those fobs are, and how important it is NOT to lose them... so I'm betting the previous owner probably forgot they had it and it's shoved in a drawer somewhere. If they don't have it, I'd call up the nearest MINI dealer and explain your situation. They probably won't give you a second fob for free, but they might be able to make sure that the missing fob won't open your car if it's ever found with no charge. It can't hurt to ask. At least then you'll have some peace of mind about that 2nd fob.

If you have trouble finding the aux jack, lemme know and I will break out my digital camera for you. I leave my aux cable plugged in all the time, don't have the iPod adapter myself, but maybe someone else here does and can answer your questions about it.

Oh... and WELCOME TO NAM!!!

Rifster: I did not have to haggle it was an internet price and Compared to anything I found here in Tampa it was a price I was happy with so I did not even try. I had to drive South to pick it up, I wanted to be able to walk in and sign and leave. The finance manager was not happy to hear I would not need any extras. I was was even able to catch a couple of innings of the Rays blow out against the Marlins while in Miami

MakoBimmer: That was exactly what I was looking for thank you!

Ken G: For whatever reason the car only came with 1 Key...really not sure why but the salesman said that was it...at 16.9K I did not think it was worth the fight. I ordered another tonight from the local mini...with no compassion at over $250.
I know what you mean about the extended warranties however we intend to have this car for 6+ years so I thought it might be worth it.

RandomGemini: I will be sure to sawp out the keys on a regular basis, thanks for the info.

I will look for the ipod cord some more, my adapter has the Aux plus a usb so I thought I needed a ipod with a Y 1/8 stereo & USB which I could not find anywhere.

I took DD (almost 13) for a ride tonight and she was really excited, we have told her this will be her first car in a few years and she is thrilled...I guess I will be buying me a new mini in 2012!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome, this is the first used car we ever bought so I was nervous but it looks like the savings is worth it

You got a seriously good deal on that MINI.

I looked up the USB adapter's location in my manual. The USB adapter for your iPod should be in the center stack next to the aux input jack. You will have to reach up under the toggle switches and feel around until you find the jack. It should be on the passenger side, generally under the window switch. You will need to buy the cable separately... I discovered that for some reason, MINIs didn't come with one, but you can use the cable that came with your iPod touch.

Good luck!

Don't count on that working fully. You won't get the full functionality unless you buy the y-cable that has the iPod connector at one end, and splits to a USB and a mini stereo plug on the other.

Check out this post for more info on what you'll end up getting with just the iPod USB cable

I found that post but I can't find that y cable...any ideas where I can buy one?

I'd give your dealer a call. I don't remember seeing any aftermarket solution, but then again I bought my car with a package that included the cable, so I've never watched for that! Someone here had opened the cable up and if I recall had found some specific circuitry to make it work with the MINI so that too would lead me to believe there is no aftermarket solution (other than the less-than optimal solution of simply using the iPod factory cable). Someone in another post said that it was $105 canadian $$, so it should be around that in the USA.

Good luck!

I believe the Y-cable is only available from MINI dealers. It is more than just a cable. Has some electronics. Price is around $100. Should have come with any USB equipped MINI, but probably went the way of the spare fob.

I have one other suggestion--if you join a local club you might get discounts at the dealers. That's true with both the BMW club and the two MINI clubs in the Houston area. What items(s) are covered may vary by area. We needed a battery on our BMW a few months ago while we were on a trip, and there were 4 prices quoted at 4 different dealerships, even though the base price was the same. Some gave no discount on batteries, but we got 20% off at one of the St. Louis locations.

I bought the USB/Bluetooth whatever package with my MCS. I am in Ontario though... any idea whether Canadians get the cable as well? I'd like some clarification on this... so that when I pick up my car this week if I open the glove box I can say "Oh SNAP! Where's my ipod cable?" or "Hooray! I have an ipod cable!"

I am mentally preparing myself for the worst.

In Ontario... they make a big production of "installing" the floormats in your car, then charging you $200 bucks for them. (I'm talking the cheap carpeted ones that they probably remove from the vehicle then charge you for in order to get them back.) I politely let them know they can keep their mats, and I will keep my $200.00 this time. Then I asked for free mud flaps. haha

That's an amazing price! Congrats!

I also recommend morristown mini for accessories, they're the best.

I paid $101.50 + tax for the cable upon picking up the new MCS in March. I expect you will have to pay the dealer similar...

Did OP actually join 'gently used' and "MINI" in the same sentence?
