Okay, this is ridiculous... surely I'm not the only one.
 

About 3-4 weeks ago, I took my '08 MCS into the dealership to get brakes replaced.

When I received the car back, I noticed the next day that the windshield had a wierd 8-9" "L-shaped" crack in it starting at the top of the windshield.

No chips, no marks, just a crack.

I called the dealership and they said to bring the car in and they would cover it under warranty.

That was a month or so ago.

Last week, I bought my '09 JCW. I've got roughly 1200 miles on it and I drove from NC to FL last night.

I got in and as I happened to glance across the windshield, I saw this.

The EXACT same crack in the exact same place.

Anyone else have this same problem? How can I get the exact same crack in the same place within weeks of each other in two separate and different cars?

I have the wierdest luck.

PS. No, I won't take my car back to the dealership if they'll let me change it out at my bodyshop. The last time they changed out the windshield, they had to replace the mirror and moulding on the fender and gouged the fender down to bare metal.

After I repaired the fender, I took the car back for them to replace the mirror on the door and they gave it back to me with a dent in the door. :mad:

So, if I can them to let me replace the windshield myself, I will.

Most dealers contract out windshield replacements, so you might be able to convince them. Heck, if it's covered by warranty you might even get paid for the work.

That certainly is weird! Start thinking about the static variables- where you park, drive, etc.

Are you making high G left turns? :lol:

In 20 Years of Autobody work i have seen this many times, Not with Coops but Other cars, Older dodge trucks would have same cracks, from truck to truck, it was a corner weld on cowl to windshild that cracked then flex took out glass,
The adhesive used is a hard urethane rubber put in with a caulking gun, i have seen where a tech starts and stops leaving a larger clump or thickness of materal causing hard spot, or more common, to save 20 bucks ( most insurance co ) try to do a partial replacement, it where you try to keep cutter blade as close to glass as possable, then skim coating the old urethane to hold windshild in. the miss match or lumpy adhesive could cause this, becuase of the differnce in hardness and thickness of adhesive
a hard metal object, some top rubber moulding have a tin or alloy spine that is rubber coated to hang over glass edge,

I always do a total replacement, cut all the Urethane off the pinch weld, use a New fresh pinch weld primer, i start a bead of Urethane from top corner to top corner no stops, single uniform thickness and height, then from top corner down piller to center of car, then same on other side, meeting in center, i would replace the top rubber moulding, could be some thing as small as a old chip of glass stuck in it or alloy spine bare rubbing glass, if there is any thing against the edge of glass or a chip in edge it can cause a break once car flexs, even new glass if it has a chip in the edge

Not sure if you can tell, But is the break in the lower or top glass? the windshiled it a laminated glass, if its top or bottom layer, it might give ya a clue to what is breaking it,

I did put a glass in my coop a week after i bought it the Dealership paid the shop i worked at to do it, But i cant recall exactly if the top moulding had the alloy in it, but its been about 2 years ago

I have the same exact crack, left my car out in the sun for a few hours instead of the garage and craaaack. I was sunny and 90 out.

My crack is in a different place, but the dealership refused to fix it under warranty. They refused to pull the A-pillar to see if there was an installation issue as well that could have caused the crack. The right rear (passenger side) window is also making the same horrid sounds as the windshield use to make before it cracked. Would not surprise me to see it crack as well.

When it comes to glass, it is a crap shoot. I lost.

Having been in the bodyshop business myself for over 25 years, I too have seen this, however, it shouldn't be a concern considering this car is less than 2 weeks old and my other MCS was less than a year old.

Coming from the factory, I would think the windshield was urethaned in correctly... (hopefully but not guaranteed)

We'll see if they'll let me install it at my shop.

I have an 05 MCS (with sensor) and have the exact same crack in the exact same place! However I did take a rock to the windshield right where the crack started.

Happened to me this weekend! Only 6000 miles... boo! I'm still waiting on word back from my service advisor at Motor City Mini.
