Heat and sunroof sticking

For those of you not following the weather on the east coast, it's been d*** hot the last couple of weeks. This has been causing a problem with my sunroof. After it's been sitting in the sun for at least an hour in 93+ heat this happens. If the roof is closed and I hit the toggle for it to crack automatically, it will move about a quarter of an inch max, and then return to the closed position. If I hold the toggle to open, it does the same thing repeatedly until I let go. If it's been open in the sun, it closes fine.

Anyone else?

I'd like to ask question that doesn't seem to have appeared in either of these threads.

When you try to open the top and it sticks, does the glass seem to stick to the rubber seals, or does it move off the seals, then stops and reverses?

If I remember correctly that is covered in that last thread. Someone lubbed up the rubber seal to see if that would help. I dont' think it did.

I missed seeing that, so much for my speed-reading skills.

Mine's the complete opposite. If it's left vented in the sun all day, and I try to close it, it just pops right back up until I open it all the way a couple times.

Kinda sounds like there's something expanding to the point that it jams the lift mechanism. Who knows??? It would be interesting to see what the installation looks like.

RMT, your profile doesn't list where you live, so we can't compare how f'ing hot it is out there.

Some day, we'll all find out what's causing the sunroof problem. There's a bunch of threads on this.

Can't speak for others, but mine definitely does NOT stick to the seals. It moves about 1/4" and then stops. Now that the weather is hot, it's started doing it again. A friend's '08 is doing it, too, only his is doing something with the tilt function.

BTW, here's another thread, one that I started: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...d.php?t=139480

OK, it's not the seals...

Princeton Mini wrote on my service report, "CURRENTLY UNDER INVESTIGATION BY BMW NA"

who luckily are located in NJ in a brand new building with no tree coverage, so I'm guessing they have reproduced it and just don't know how or why to fix. I would expect to have a TSB as soon as they figure this out...

Just to play devil's advocate -- I haven't observed any sunroof issues, and we're in the same area Corey. However, best of luck to you, hope everything turns out OK

Having it happen to me, I definitely think its something sticking do to the heat, and not a motor issue. The behavior is very similar to pinch protection on power windows.

Corey, keep us posted, I'm not going to have anything done about this till there is a TSB and a clear remedy, its a minor issue, easily fixed by just pushing up on the rear glass when you go to open. Princeton is my dealership as well, so its good to know they are aware of the issue.
