Help with music CD MP3 for MCS
Hello all...
Would you please give me some tips on how to burn MP3 CD that my CD player in Cooper S can play and display LIST? I did once with Nero and now I can't do it again. Now it only read Track 1, 2...etc. thanks. |
you make a data CD and put all your MP3's on it. If you want the list to show up you have to make sure the MP3's have good ID tags.
This will only work on the Cooper S tho :P |
Here's what NOT to do:
- Create a CD with a folder with more than 255 char's - Create a CD with multiple sub folders more than 8 levels deep - Create mp3's without IDv1 tags (else you can't see LIST > TRACK mode) - Create mp3's with VBR (occasionally, the mp3's will sound like it's stuttering, breaking up) - Create a mp3's with unicode (use only roman char's A-Z, 0-9, and basic top row symbols; anything else like russian char's, tilde char's, two dot on top char's, asian char's etc will show incorrectly as gibberish/garbage) Other than that, I separate my mp3 cd's by directory level usually Artist > track - mp3 title. Album information, I throw into the IDv1 tag and keep a mental recap of how the layout is. Hope this helps you. Good luck |
Look online for a ID Tag Editor program (there are plenty of them!).
Edit your mp3 tags. Burn a mp3 disc as a "data CD'. Info will show. |
Wow...THANKS...for all the tips guys. I got some hw to do :-)
|
Right, data.
There is also this thing I've had to do "make compatible". I can't remember exactly. I have a couple of things I have to do different ways and I forget. I've had really good luck with this www.goldwave.com (I bought the license it worked great for what I wanted to do) |
Thanks all...works great.

I thought this worked on the MC as well? If not I'm gonna be pissed. I do have the Hi-Fi stereo.....does that make a difference?
I was a joke, since the thread title implies Cooper S only. It will work with all MP3 CD's on all cars and all devices that take MP3 media. |

Wait just a minute! My MCS can play MP3s? Really? I thought I'd need to use audio CDs (or burn CDs in audio format).
Honestly, I've never used my CD player though - I bought an iPod Touch after I got the MCS to use w/ the adapter. Still - it can play mp3s? Really??? |

Honestly, I've never used my CD player though - I bought an iPod Touch after I got the MCS to use w/ the adapter. Still - it can play mp3s? Really??? The MP3 player in the MCS has pro's and con's. There's no setting to turn off the 2-second gap if your compilation is gapless. So if you are listening to such a compilation, all of a sudden, you'd hear it pause for 2 seconds while it switches tracks. And if the tracks are encoded into VBR, most of the time it'll play without problems, but after prolonged playback (usually after like 30-40 minutes), the VBR would stutter and break up... ejecting, reinserting the mp3 CD and playing from that track usually fixes this. Single track repeat is not available. Single folder repeat is not available. People with the SAT/NAV option that I've read can playback mp3 DVD's. I tried to put in an mp3 DVD+R, DVD-R into the labeled 'CD' deck... no work. Must have the SAT/NAV deck to take advantage. I have an iPod touch as well, but lately, I've been too lazy to update tracks for playback ... considering there's 700mb worth of music in the deck already. The only time I use the ipod touch is if I want to listen to albums that have gapless tracks. Left side wheel controls previous track (left), next track (right), volume up, and volume down, so that saves me from navigating my touch while driving and not looking at the road. haha. Just remember that when you're burning an mp3 cd, to properly label your folders, filenames, and IDv1 tags using plain english letters without the accent characters and/or unicode and you're gold. |
You are freak'n awesome! Thanks!

I ripped some MP3 files directly on to a CD, inserted into the MINI's CD player and it fired right up. Played excellent sound. My owner's manual and radio guide nowhere mention the ability of the car's system to play MP3 files. In fact, "MP3" is not mentioned anywhere in the hundreds of pages of material. But for posts on this Site about three weeks ago being able to play MP3 files I would have never known. [Saw someone mention it in passing in some other thread and decided to give it a try.] I did not do any kind of labels or what not on the tracks, so the player display simply said "Track 01" etc. But to play MP3 files I had on my PC, man that was a pleasant surprise. |
Good thing I posted the question/thread...otherwise some of mini owners would never know :-)
I love the list and scrolling feature. |
Be aware if you are listening to a track of say
(pick a number), an hour, when you leave the car off for 30 mins, the track will reset to the beginning. That's what I got that goldwave thing to do. I break up what I am listening to into 10 min segments. (it renumbers and saves automatically) This is REALLY handy for non-music mp3s. |
i hear a dirty rumour that there is an auxiliary jack somewhere in the mini.
is that true? and if so, would it be then better to just plug your ipod into it? |
MP3 CD is easy if you have iTunes. Go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Burning > click on MP3 CD. Drag music into your playlist and burn. I get about 115 songs on a disc. It shows the song title and upcoming song on the radio display. I have the standard radio.

Not that it will happen often, but you cannot have more than 255 songs on a MP3 CD. Well, you can, but the CD player won't see any songs after song #255.

I love the list and scrolling feature. Maybe the topic should be in a sticky, a thread on "obscure features and options." Especially since in my manuals "MP3" is not mentioned anywhere. It should not be a feature that is only discovered when one visits forums. |
Love my aux jack! Just wanted to throw out here for iPhone owners that the aux jack will work with it. There's a headphone adapter that you can pick up from best buy (made by Dynex) that fits into the iPhone's headphone jack and will allow a standard aux cable to be plugged in.
Go grab it from best buy now because Apple changed the jack on the second gen iPhone so these adapters are already obsolete! |
Another way to get your MP3's into the 2007 + factory radio on the R55, R56 is with the Comfort Bluetooth option. It adds a USB Port and you can use the port to plug in a MP3 player or even a thumb drive.
But any 2005+ MINI with factory CD player will read MP3 CD's. |
Not just MP3 format on CD but also WMA format too...I also used the Aux jack for me MP3 Player but I prefer CD cuz of the list...safer to control with the radio knobs than Ipod/MP3 Player.
you guys have been very helpful on this thread. Thanks again. |
Good information everyone, thanks. I think I'll start ripping MP3 CDs instead of plugging my player into the Aux Jack every time, a lot easier to navigate tracks this way.
