Anybody Slip Up During Break-in?

Has anyone here slipped up and gone beyond the recommended RPM or MPH during break-in?

Not looking for preaching on the ills of failing to follow the manual. Just want to see if anyone pushed the limit too far.

I confess, with just over 300 miles on mine, I went a bit over the RPM limit today (for a second or two).

I think almost everyone's done that during break-in, especially if it's the first time they've owned a MINI - it's just too easy to let the revs get away from you for a second or two.

No harm done unless you pegged it at the rev limiter and left it there. The break-in guidelines are more of a philosophy than a set of hard-and-fast rules.

Yeah, read the manual and broke the rules several times ... Did the break in under two weeks, changed the oil at 2500 miles and now at 3500 and car and engine runs like a champ ! Like Scott said, very easy to do in a MINI and no harm done as long as you do keep it pegged

I wouldn't worry about it,when the dealer factory tech first drove mine with the JCW kit which was the first one they did.He drove it hard and let it go...May not be popular but I have had a lot of fast and fun cars over the years and I find they run better with just driving them, don't abuse it ,but have fun...IMO....

If your MINI was test drove before you bought it chances are they went over the 4500 rpms

I wonder why they went with 1200 miles instead of a flat 1,000. They must have a reason. My dealer told me that they didn't really have a break-in period with these cars but the owners manual says otherwise. I decided to follow the owners manual but I am still 220 miles short of the break-in.....

It had 5 miles on it when I drove it off the lot...but I see what you're getting at. A lot of them that have been sitting on the lot have been "driven". I know the one I test drove saw well above 5000 RPM

Everyone goes a bit beyond the recommended limit. These are fun little cars which really want to be driven. Keep it sane but enjoy it, it will be fine.

On my delivery day, I drove home in a spirited manner and it was hard not to push a little bit on the east tollway.

Before my first oil change at 6800 miles I managed to drive two long out of state trips. Nothing was said at the dealer about my spirited break-in.

Enjoy your MINI.

I was bouncing off the rev limiter out of the parking lot at the dealer . Break-In is completely unnecessary. 30k miles later (25k of which have been spent with over 240 HP) my car is fine, still has perfect compression and leakdown is great .

Most of us custom order our MINI's. Nobody so much as touched my car before I did except for dock personnel loading it onto the ship, and dealer personnel moving it around on the lot before I picked it up. I was basically there as they unloaded it off the transport from the VDC.

My MA, upon handing the car over to me, cautioned against going passed the recommended RPM and speed during break-in too much. And then he winked. Don't sweat it.

Probably because it is the closest round number to 2,000 kilometers.

My first MINI I slipped up and followed BMW's ridiculous break-in recommendations. It dyno'd the least power in stock form of all 4 of my MINI's. If you want a slow engine follow the break-in methods.

The manual also says stay under 90 mph.

What speedo is that? It doesn't look like an R56.

Sorry, I hit the "new posts" search and didn't realize this was in the R56 forum. I'll crawl back into my R53 hole.

My manual says under 100...however, I wasn't in 6th when I went over the recommended RPM, more like 3rd.

I'm still in my break-in period and I accidentally slipped yesterday. Not even sure how many RPMs, but it was only for a split second. Coming from a pickup, I'm not used to building RPMs so quickly!

Yep, that 6-speed manual really sneaks up on you in the lower range. I had an RX-8 before this and never worried about the RPM. I'll tell you one thing though; this car has much more pickup from a stop than any RX-8. I'm simply amazed by it every time I drive it.

Well I made it past 1000 miles this weekend, that was as long as I could wait. My father and I took Feriis out for a proper beating on Sunday. Oh man there is sooooo much more fun to be had when you can shift when you want to.

I have noticed a bit of a power gain. The engine seems, looser somehow. It's hard to describe. Before it would seem to be working at accelerating but now the speed just pours on even in normal driving. The exhaust sounds much nicer as well, very burbley and throaty!

Hey, anyone with a Jet Black R53 is a friend of mine! I'm at 600 plus in my replacement R56 and starting to "express myself"!
