R56 Anybody Slip Up During Break-in?
Who doesn't slip up during break in??? That'd be boring...
Actually, now that you mention it, it wasn't a slip up - totally on purpose!
Some would say it's better for the engine to run it hard as hell from the very beginning anyway.

Heck, yeah! Just couldn't help myself
But, I was interested to skim through the "controversial article" on engine break-in. Try not to laugh as I say this, but a car friend of mine always commented that my pick-up drove fast. My husband has snorted at this (well, it's a pick-up for heaven's sake), but I run those revs and it's not a stodgy truck.
1096 miles on Bette, and counting...

I only got up to 750 miles before I slipped a little and now my mother took the car out of state and is giving it back to me this wednesday with about 1400 on the clock,
so the last 600 miles before the first oil change are gonna be very *cough*spirited*cough*

i also found it hard not to slip up several times during break in...but i also managed to get out of my break in period in about a couple of weeks. i know i didn't cause any harm to the car by going over the max rpm or mph and if anything does go wrong it def won't be because of slipping up.
i just made sure not to beat the crap out of the car just in case i had to deal with any sort of warranty claims later. anyway i knew after i hit 1200 i would have all the time in the world to run Ambrosia hard.

Do it now--there's not a tinker's damn of difference breaking-in with the sport button on. It tights the steering, and allows better throttle response--that's it! You might even find it easier to shift with it on. A number of people have reported this. And it's not making you run over 100 mph or 4500 rpm, or whatever the numbers are--your right foot is.
I'll never understand the confusion and worry about this little button.

I wonder why they went with 1200 miles instead of a flat 1,000. They must have a reason. My dealer told me that they didn't really have a break-in period with these cars but the owners manual says otherwise. I decided to follow the owners manual but I am still 220 miles short of the break-in.....

Well that just kills it. I've been speeding all afternoon (odometer at 1263...), hitting the revs to really get some of that delightful acceleration
but now you're telling me to hold off until 2000? Nah. Not gonna happen.

No I am not telling you to hold off until 200o miles. I reiterate: Europe measures road distance in kilometers. If you had a European version of the Mini the book would tell you to keep the revs down for the first 2000 KILOMETERS which is equivalent to 1200 MILES. A kilometer is roughly .6 (six tenths) of a mile. Multiply 2000 X .6 et voila, 1200 miles.

Ooops, sorry for the mis-read. Actually I just went back to my origianl post and tried to delete it because the math hit me slightly after I'd posted (long day, teacher about to go on break - need I say more "where's my cocktail????"). Unfortunately, I haven't mastered how to delete my own posts her eon NAM either.
Read this if you really want a different perspective on break in.

You're fine
Has anyone here slipped up and gone beyond the recommended RPM or MPH during break-in?
Not looking for preaching on the ills of failing to follow the manual. Just want to see if anyone pushed the limit too far.
I confess, with just over 300 miles on mine, I went a bit over the RPM limit today (for a second or two).

Oh, wait--you've been snowed in, I guess... Spring is coming; bluebonnets are up here, so it won't be much longer for NY.
News here says bluebonnets, and wildflowers in general, will be lackluster this year in South Texas due to lack of rain. I'm hoping it's not true, but we may have to scoot over to Fredricksburg's Wildseed Farms to see if we can get our wildflower portraits with our eight-year old daughter and newborn SS MCSC.
OMG, I'm off topic! Quick Fix: I haven't gotten past 85 in the first 400-500 miles, but I'm hoping to find a wide open road to test the limits.
