Break-In Question

I have 2008 MCS 6-spd. It's been only two days and of course still break in period, so far 165 miles, ok here is my dumb question. During the break in period hit the sports button or not? I only hit the sports button for the test drive to check.

All it does it make the throttle more responsive and tighten up the steering.

On a side note, you didn't use the sport button during your test drive?!

Stay off the SB until your break in is over.

You can use the Sport button during break-in as long as you stay under 4,500 rpm, and below 90 mph, and vary your speed when cruising.

"Break in"? Is this like an official term once the cars leave the lot?

I'm hoping to pick my car up Saturday. Anything in particular that i need to look for/check out before i leave?

See thats my problem, I decided to hit the SB today at 765 miles, and i loved it enough i almost went past 4500 rpm,
So yea I decided for the health of my new baby to keep it off, and the DCS button off for the break in period

In case of what? You have too much fun?

Here's how you break-in your R56 for excellent ring and bearing seating:
1. Start engine and let warm up for 2 minutes
2. Pull out of showroom, turn onto street, and FLOOR IT all the way to redline
3. Engine brake from redline all the way back down to about 1500 RPM
4. Accelerate lightly to cruising speed, then engine brake lightly.
5. Stop at red light.
6. Repeat 2-5 several times for 10 miles, then be less aggressive for the next 10 miles.
7. Odometer = 20 miles. Viola, your engine is about 90% broken-in.
8. Go home and change oil and filter with OEM stuff [or OEM filter and your fave full-syn oil]
9. For the next 200 miles, be nice to the clutch and brakes as they're still bedding-in.
10. Drive it to enjoy it!

...because BMW wants your engine to guzzle oil and be slow, is my best guess.

Lots of truth to this method folks. It will make your piston rings seat well and the engine will likely run strong for the remainder of its life.

I used my SB from day one will no ill effects. Just drive it normally, if the car can't handle that then something is very wrong.

Its something that happens to our MINIs when they have less then a thousand miles when you take them off the showroom floors. Its referring to a period where the car should only have to take minimum abuse until things such as machining oils burn off or out(exhaust) of the system

First, Spam, I think the only dumb question is the one NOT asked!

As for the sport button, don't worry about it. The only things it does, as VicSkimmr points out, is change the throttle and steering responses. Actually, you might be better off with the SB on, if you're like those of us who find it easier to shift 1-2 and 2-3 gears with it on. Don't know why it's that way, but I'm not the only one to comment on it in these threads.

Keep it under 4500/90 like you're supposed to, and break in will be over before you know. And by now you've only got 23 miles to go, right?

Sorry you had to wait--my wireless was on the fritz again last night.

The answer is yes--check out:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...elivery+advice

This is a darn fine list Moneypenny wrote--used it myself a year ago, and can't think of anything that should have been on it. There are a couple of things that have changed--dealer programming is no longer necessary now.

MAKE SURE YOU GET A THOROUGH BRIEFING! I put it in caps because I've seen so many questions that were asked by people who weren't so lucky. They're always amazed that some of us did. (Oh, why did my MA leave MINI--he was such an asset. Went to Saturn...)

We've had this come up from time to time, and it's getting harder to find through the search function--can it be made a sticky somehow?
