So.. I was on the highway, I downshifted from 5th to 4th, but I actually got 2nd..

I was traveling at around 65mph in 5th gear, and downshifted to get more oomph (technical term). Only I mis-shifted and hit 2nd. The tachometer jumped up around to 7000RPM, the DSC blinked once and obviously the car lurched a bit. But I quickly engaged the clutch and upshifted to 3rd.
Car appears fine, and it was a stupid mistake. Should I be concerned?

Nah, don't stress over a one-time event. I know it must have startled you, and I'm sure it sounded awful, but our little cars won't crap out over one missed shift.

In Porsche circles they call that the "Money Shift". Sounds like the rev limiter and you caught it early enough that they was no damage. If there was, I believe you would have known it right away.

rev limiter can not catch mis-shift. The car would over driven by the wheels, and any cut in fuel or spark will not stop the car from overrunning.

65 to 2nd is not a huge issue, the normal running limit in 2nd is like 60mph anyway.

actually somewhere between 53 and 56 - I've been bouncing off the rev limiter in second enough times on the auto-x track to know .

7000 rpm for a very short time shouldn't have done any damage though.

I bet the OP is alot more careful after this though! There was potential to mess things up badly.

I've done it once and was like

I started a thread like this a long time ago when I shifted from 4th to 3rd while at 4000 RPM (I'd wanted 5th):

Thanks for that. The search function failed me.

Thanks to everyone else as well.

Also I guess I did not realize the redline on the R56 is 7500rpm. (http://www.motoringfile.com/2006/11/...-the-2007-mcs/

After checking a calculator (data is approximate), I was probably going a tad faster than 65MPH, but I did not exceed 7000RPM if I hit it at all.

I also did this when my car had around 1000 miles on it. It has almost 11000 now, and it doesn't seem to have affected it.

Glad to hear the car's OK. I never drove stick until I got my Mini (the car made learning painless, by the way) but the apparent "money shift" is one of my biggest fears.

If you Money Shifted, and did some damage, you would know it immediately. I thought I had ruined my trnasmission in my old Z4 when I did this once but everything was fine. But those who have performed the Money SHift will tell you that you know something is damaged immediately.

I don't think the top gear article was correct.

Money shifted my Z3 from 5th to 2nd. It broke several blades from the belt driven fan, and the engine was horribly out of balance at that point. The viscous fan clutch was never the same (loud) but it's at 157k miles and still runs very smoothly. Definitely true that money shift can not be stopped by any kind of rev limiter.
