Not so secret, I'm afraid

Someone has documented the "secret" compartment on youtube.

I've been wondering if I should just leave the blasted thing open when I get out.

I would hate for someone to break my window thinking there will be something tasty in there.

Well, if they were that inclined to break into your MINI because of the "secret compartment", they would break into it anyway regardless. All cars have them; some different from others, and I mean, dang, all cars have gloveboxes and most have consoles, and my Altima has two other compartments too. Honda Minivans have a thing under the floor. Hubby has a HHR and it has a couple hidden ones. It isn't an uncommon feature in a vehicle to have a "hidden compartment". Theives know this.

I am just careful where I park and don't leave valuable things in the car. And if you have an aftermarket nav system- the kind with a wire that suction cups to the window- take it off and wipe the suction rings off the window with a napkin or your shirttail or anything you can find when you park. That is the hot new "smash and grab" item these days, apparently.

I thought the "secret" term was kind of a joke...

I agree, but I have seen many people on here posting they put their ipod, etc. in there and don't worry about it because it is secret. Maybe I missed their sarcasm?

korby Oct 9, 2007 10:58 AM

I think it sucks also ,I kept $500 emergency money in it on our trip up the north coast did'nt even lock it a few times .

If they didn't put it in the secret compartment they would just put it in the glovebox instead. I honestly don't see why you're worried about this? No theif is going to break into a car just to get to a "secret" storage compartment that probably has nothing of value in it.

Dang, Korby, you're just dying to give all the thieves out there a reason to smash Kasey's window, aren't you? Now they're all gonna think he has $500 and an i-pod and if they watched The Italian Job, they might think he has some gold bricks in the boot! He's toast! We're all toast!

Naw, not worried, just warning.

As for the thief angle, Zyamfier had his window broken out and door bent just this last weekend just to take an ipod.

In Hawaii, people pry open trunks of cars parked along the highways all the time to take $20 of stuff. You are warned when you rent your car that when you park to go to the beach, leave nothing in the car and leave it unlocked because people will break the windows to see if anything is inside.

Saw this myself last week...it's crazy the amount of thievery there. Got very lucky leaving my wallet, wife's purse, and a $1200 camera in the trunk of our convertible there before I realized how risky that was.

Of course it was a Chrysler product I was driving...maybe that was the limiting factor

gokartride Oct 9, 2007 01:30 PM

*sigh*.....well it was not going to last, was it? Consider "the secret" the unique realm of the intrepid '07 R56 early-adopting visionaries. You may have gotten an odd CEL, but hey....you also got "the secret"!!! Oh...you also got the car!! Life is good!!!

I noticed that no one left a comment on YouTube about this video. I figured that someone would have slammed the poster by now.

Someone surely put it on there to show a friend that couldn't figure this out.

I wonder how much gold you could stash in the secret compartment. Hmmm....

Here's another little tidbit I'll leak out: One can gain access to a Mazda3 by kicking the locked driver's side door in just the right spot.

Ooooops, I hope no one reading this has a Mazda3.

I left a comment.
That's a cool feature.

Re: Hawaii, 30+ years ago I was there and the rental car people said the same thing. That's pathetic.

daffodildeb Oct 9, 2007 09:00 PM

Wish mine opened that easily!

I'm not going to worry about it, though--if you want in on a car, you'll get in.

Secret compartment? Come on, in every other car that "compartment" is called a glove box. Have you Motard (R56) owners not been in a car before?

Please go and start a thread about how unique the skinny pedal on the on the floor under the steering wheel is. I have heard that in a Motard when you put pressure on it, it magically makes the car move forwards or backwards. Although I would assume you are still trying to figure out how you choose which direction. Look for the direction changing thread, it will be coming up shortly.

Forgot your happy pills today, xbook? It is a secret compartment...it is definitely not a glovebox (too small)...it has no obvious latch...appears to be a fixed part of the dash (where the passenger airbag is on R50)...and there already is another proper glovebox. Get it now? I hope so.

In other news, I'm surprised we actually got the secret compartment. I'd heard initially it was there for the multi-CD changer and so I thought "no changer, no compartment." Seemed to make sense. So when R56s started showing up w/ the compartment sealed I thought, "no problem"...it seemed logical. They they started showing up unsealed which wasn't logical but very cool!!! I'm still a bit amazed MINI did this, but I like it!!

Wow! Please go take your meds. If you don't like my threads, no reason to read them. Feel free to add me to your ignore list like I just added you to mine.

Whats ironic is that even though you're trying to portray R56 owners as retards, all you've done is make yourself look like a moron. You, sir, deserve a cookie.

From Miriam-Webster:

Main Entry: glove compartment
Function: noun
: a small storage cabinet in the dashboard of an automobile

No mention of size requirements, latch requirements, nor being limited to 1 per vehicle.

On with your useless thread.

If even what you said is true, there is no reason to be so condescending. Tsk tsk.
