Do you notice any sluggishness when it's hot outside?

Cruising at 55 mph in remote county road, I downshifted to 3rd and let her rip. She didn't rip up the asphalt like she usually does. I blame the hot air. I thought it was weird and turned the A/C off and tried again but it was still not as exhilerating as it did before. I don't think it is my dulled perception.

an engine, intaking cooler air is more efficient.

gokartride Aug 29, 2007 06:45 PM

I don't notice it, but I probably will when (and if) temps really cool off around here. I really noticed it in my R50, but in my R56 even running the AC seems to sap very little (if any...must be some, theoretically) power. Of course, I'm essentially only doing milk runs.

I thought the same thing today!

here in alabama it was 100+ for over ten days straight and i didn't notice anything, but then again i got my MINI the first of august. with august being the hotest month here.

Robin Casady Aug 29, 2007 06:53 PM

I usually feel rather sluggish when it is 100 degrees here. I've also noticed that my MCS seems a little sluggish when I forget to turn on the Sport button.

Firebolt Aug 29, 2007 08:02 PM

ugh, that happened to me today, i was worried for half a second till i realized the air was on full blast and it was 95 outside. :\, i can't wait till winter time :-)

This is definitely the case.

In addition, I usually have my air conditioner cranked up to the max and that doesn't do my engine any favors either.

Not my Wilhelmina's fault...

Please in advance excuse my bad english:

Mini cars 06 and 07 use super and turbo charger. Very cold intake air better for engine than hot.

My old 06 mini s drives very good when cold. Very very bad when very hot. New mini s has turbo which has same problem. Cold air much dense that hot one.

In South Africa I had turbo subaru which drives very bad in hot weather or very damp weather too.

Romi gets sluggish and the gas mileage suffers as the temps get hotter. Last night I had to make a late night run to the airport to pick up the Wife unit and Romi surprised me. All of a sudden she was running like she has never run before.

And I noted the gas mileage improved dramatically as well. I guess the smaller engine dramatizes the effects of the ambient temperature more.

PaulCIssa Aug 30, 2007 07:38 AM

Cool, moist air contributes to a more dense charge. Hot, dry air is tougher to cool via the intercooler since the turbo will heat the inlet air beyond it's ambient temp and a higher ambient robs the intercooler's ability to cool the already hot charge. Coupled with the source air being less dense to begin with, you'll feel a difference in performance on almost any internal combustion engine, turbo, screw-charged or normally aspirated.

my two cents.

Happy motoring!

Corona? Isn't that a Toyota?

Hot air for turbo? Bad
Cold air? Good

Think air densities.

Corona is my MCS! Corolla is Toyota!

No sorry, Toyota Corona is a Toyota. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Corona

Coronas have been around for a lot more years than a MINI. That's OK, I don't think Toyota will mind you calling your car that. After all ...

"imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" ... but oh wait, aren't Toyotas considered appliances?

 Just kidding:)

Loony2N Aug 30, 2007 01:30 PM

Happens to me all the time. Haven't noticed it with the MINI though.

r56mini Aug 30, 2007 02:03 PM

Corona = Crown (Latin). Actually got the name from one of my favorite beers. My Corona has Corona antenna ball.

Corona is also the ring of fire around the sun.

I doubt many people on this board would remember it considering it last appeared in the US in the 80's.

Last Saturday afternoon it was 90 plus here in the Springs. I definitely noticed (for the first time) a definite lag in performance. Yes, the sport button was on and as always the A/C was on. So much so, that I even commented about it to my son. Later, early evening, all was back to normal...whew! I would say it was purposely software induced. It was like a switch had been thrown. No more comments about density and temperature please...this was not a "mild case" of performance deterioration.

My mother owned a 1969 Toyota Corona 4 door. A real POS. It spent a LOT of time in the shop.

I dunno. MINI age demographics are wide spread. I would bet there are just as many older owners and younger owners. I believe there is a thread here somewhere with a poll on age and the average age might be older than many think:wink:
